Job description

Position Overview

We are seeking an entry-level data scientist and junior faculty to join our clinical data research lab. You will work at two locations—the STAR-ORC lab at the UMB campus and the new University of Maryland-Institute for Health Computing in North Bethesda, a hub for next-generation computational analytics in health and human disease. In this role, you will develop and implement data analysis pipelines, apply advanced statistical and machine learning methods, and integrate diverse data assets (clinical, biological, environmental) to support a range of clinical research projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead data analysis in clinical and laboratory research projects.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute ideas for research methodologies and planning.
  • Develop grant applications to secure research funding.
  • Design, develop, and maintain data analysis pipelines, including data extraction, cleaning, transformation, quality assurance, and monitoring.
  • Apply statistical and machine learning methods to perform meaningful data analyses.
  • Create high-quality graphs and write manuscript sections detailing methodologies and results for publications.
  • Collaborate with team members to design and conduct clinical research studies.
  • Work with clinicians and scientists to translate research findings into clinical practice.
  • Utilize next-generation computational approaches for analyzing complex big data assets.
  • Integrate advanced mathematical models to predict key health outcomes such as treatment response and hospitalizations.
  • Promote analytics that address bias and improve health equity.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong programming skills in Python, R, or other statistical programming languages.
  • Experience with statistical methods (descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing, time series analysis, etc.) and machine learning techniques (data cleaning, feature engineering, hyperparameter tuning, model evaluation, and interpretation).
  • Ability to conduct scientific literature searches and reviews.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Experience functioning effectively as a team member or leader.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with clinical data and clinical research methods.
  • Familiarity with statistical and machine learning libraries and tools (e.g., Scikit-learn, pandas).
  • A significant publication record in clinical or health care analytics and a proven track record of applying for grant funding.
  • Experience with deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch) is a plus.

Benefits & Perks

  • Compensation: Base Compensation with an expected salary range of $69,336 to $164,684. Note that actual compensation may vary based on geographic location, experience, internal equity, and market conditions.
  • Comprehensive retirement program.
  • Generous leave package including over 4 weeks of vacation, paid holidays, personal leave, and unlimited accrual of sick time.
  • Comprehensive health insurance.
  • Professional learning and development opportunities.
  • Tuition remission for employees and their dependents at any University System of Maryland school.
