The Opportunity: 

The College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at Washington State University (WSU) is seeking to fill a full-time permanent Associate Dean for Professional Programs (ADPP) position. The ADPP will be a tenured full professor with a flexible appointment assignment depending upon interest. The ADPP reports directly to the dean and serves as a member of the college leadership team. The ADPP has broad oversight and responsibility for the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program with direct engagement in program curriculum, assessment, operations, academic affairs, and accreditation. The ADPP serves on the Academic Council and interacts with the leads for all 4 years of the DVM curriculum. In addition, the ADPP supervises well-established leaders and functional teams in student affairs, admissions, and counseling and wellness. As a tenured faculty member, the ADPP maintains an active teaching, advising, and mentoring role in the DVM curriculum and contributes to professional, undergraduate, and/or graduate instruction.

More specific responsibilities include:

  • Maintain an active tenured faculty role in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, including regular classroom teaching, course development and delivery, student advising, and mentoring in the DVM curriculum.

  • Serve as the primary academic liaison for regional program partnerships (currently Montana, Idaho and Utah) and support alignment of educational objectives and program delivery across partner sites.

  • Work with the Academic Council, Curriculum Committee, and year-level leaders to support instructional quality, student learning outcomes, and continuous improvement across all four years of the DVM curriculum

  • Coordinate and oversee academic support services for professional students, including pre-veterinary outreach, admissions, student affairs, counseling and wellness, career advising, and student ceremonies, in support of student success in the professional program.

  • Collaborate with college leadership and staff in communications, facilities, fundraising, strategic planning, and community engagement to advance and support the professional educational mission of the College of Veterinary Medicine

  • Provide academic leadership for the DVM program, including oversight of curriculum design, implementation, review, revision, renewal, and assessment, and ensure curricular effectiveness and compliance with accreditation standards.

  • Oversee academic program assessment including ongoing assessment of program outcomes via collection and analysis of internal and external data, assessment of regional program effectiveness.

  • Oversee academic program operations including accreditation, educational systems and resources, program policies and processes, and supervision and professional development of personnel supporting the professional program.

  • Represent WSU professional programs to external program partners including American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges and other entities at the national/international level focused on veterinary medical education and health professions education more broadly.

Additional Information:

Monthly Salary: $165,000 - $175,000 | Commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition, while serving as Associate Dean of Professional Programs, this position will be eligible for an administrative stipend for the duration of the Associate Dean appointment. 

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. Successful candidates typically begin up to mid-point of the salary range.

Required Qualifications:

  • A veterinary degree (DVM, BVSc or equivalent) and a PhD in veterinary sciences or a related field by time of hire.

  • A minimum of 5 years in roles as a leader in a veterinary institution including experience with academic affairs, outcomes assessment, student success, or curriculum management.

  • Demonstrated excellence in supervising staff, communications, and a commitment to outreach and engagement.

  • Six (6) years of experience as an Associate Professor or equivalent is required to be considered as a Full Professor.

  • Must have a background and expertise in educational pedagogy.

  • Diplomate status in a recognized specialty in an American or European College of specialists is required.

  • A record of teaching, research, and service accomplishments consistent with the appointment of rank as a Professor at WSU as specified in the College’s Tenure and Promotion Guidelines

About the DVM Program: The college is the 5th oldest veterinary program in the United States and we celebrated our 125th anniversary in 2024. Our educational program is progressive, we are home to the Teaching Academy and are leaders in the Regional Teaching Academy. We are home to innovative programs including diagnostic challenges and the first accredited simulation-based education that includes excellent communications training. About the College: The WSU CVM is home to five departments/schools, including Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS), Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology (VMP), Integrative Physiology and Neuroscience (IPN), the School of Molecular Biosciences (SMB), and the Paul G. Dedicated to this vision and mission are more than 60 full-time faculty members and 170 staff and house officers. The VTH is the leading referral center in the state of Washington and the Pacific Northwest with over 20,000 patient visits per year. We are also home to the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (WADDL) whose mission is to provide accurate, state-of-the-art, timely, and cost-effective diagnostic services, consultation, disease surveillance and outreach to safeguard animal health, the food supply, and public health. The WADDL is a USDA-APHIS National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) Tier I Laboratory and is in the FDA Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network for investigation of food safety.

About the Area: Washington State University’s Pullman campus in Eastern Washington sits in the rich agricultural area known as the Palouse.
