Job description

The Department of Chemistry and Physics at the University of Mary Washington, a small, public liberal arts and sciences university located 50 miles south of Washington, DC, in Fredericksburg, VA, is seeking applicants for adjunct faculty to begin August 2026, with teaching responsibilities in the fall and spring semesters. Applicants must have a minimum of a Masters in chemistry or a closely related field and be able to teach Organic Chemistry.

Responsibilities

Successful candidates must be able to teach in-person in a student-centered small lecture and laboratory setting. Adjunct faculty are expected to teach lecture and lab for the course that is assigned, along with classroom management including preparation of lecture materials, supervision of students in laboratory, development of instructional materials and assessments, and grading assignments. Adjunct faculty must hold 2 office hours per week.

Required

· Masters or Ph.D. in Chemistry (or one of the sub-disciplines of chemistry), Chemical Education, or a closely related field, with at least 18 graduate credit hours in chemistry

· Ability to teach Organic Chemistry I and II (lecture and lab) in person in Fredericksburg, VA

Preferred

· Teaching experience in a secondary and/or post-secondary setting as instructor of record

· Dedication to effective teaching and high-impact learning in an inclusive environment that embraces diverse talents and backgrounds
