Description of Work

The CSS Neuse State Historic Site consists of the CSS Neuse Museum and the Governor Richard Caswell Memorial. The CSS Neuse State Historic Site preserves and interprets the remnants of the CSS Neuse Civil War ironclad gunboat, and the Governor Richard Caswell Memorial honors one of Kinston’s most important early citizens, and the first elected Governor of North Carolina. The CSS Neuse museum’s first floor offers visitors valuable insight into Kinston’s location, the ship’s historical significance, sailor life, and the ship’s recovery. The mezzanine level features a range of exhibits that showcase the rich history of Lenoir County, including textiles, mourning, and the Civil War in eastern North Carolina. The Governor Richard Caswell Memorial provides exhibits and artifacts interpreting Governor Caswell and includes the Caswell Cemetery on the property.

- The Historic Interpreter III serves as the Programs Coordinator, tasked with developing educational programs for field trips tailored to public, private, and homeschool groups, as well as interpretive programs for the general public.
- Primary staff member on site in charge of working with the Friends of the CSS Neuse Museum to ensure the gift shop is maintained and provide suggestions for merchandise items.
- Conducts tours as part of visitor services, gives on-site and off-site presentations, leads living history demonstrations, and operates the sales desk.
- Leads special event planning, logistics, and promotions, including managing social media for both sites.
- Operates sales desks, greets visitors, and assists with site maintenance at both the CSS Neuse Museum and the Governor Caswell Memorial.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

• Design, develop, and deliver engaging educational programs, including school field trips and workshops, ensuring compliance with state education standards (e.g., NC Essential Standards or similar).
• Welcome all guests, provide museum orientations, lead guided tours of exhibits, and operate the Point-of-Sale (POS) system for admissions and gift shop transactions.
• Assist with recruiting and training volunteers for educational activities, tours, and living history events.
• Promote programs through flyers, press releases, newsletters, and social media platforms to drive attendance.
• Plan and execute special events, lectures, and living history programs, coordinating logistics with guest speakers, re-enactors, and vendors.
• Manage facility rentals, weddings, and corporate events to generate income, acting as the primary contact for clients, providing venue tours, coordinating logistics, and supervising on-site events.
• Assist with performing clerical and financial duties, perform site purchasing via e-procurement, and follow all departmental purchasing procedures and guidelines.

Recruitment Range: $33,902.00 - $43,748.00

Candidates meet the minimum qualifications of this position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement.   • Experience in planning and scheduling special events, educational programs for field trips, and public events within a museum, historic site, library, or non-profit organization. 

  • Experience with social media marketing.

  • Strong computer skills, including but not limited to Canva, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook (email and calendar), and Microsoft Teams.

  • Knowledge of North Carolina history and interpretive techniques.

Position/Physical Requirements 

  • Must be available to work the schedule of Tuesday - Saturday 8:30am - 5:00pm with occasional evenings and weekend work required as needed.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.

  • Must have the ability to set-up and take down tables and chairs for education programs and special events.

  • Must have strong communication, decision-making, and organizational skills with the ability to work effectively in a team setting and alone, and with diverse audiences.
