Technical & Qualification Training Manager – Field Services

Location: Roanoke, Virginia

Department: Field Services

Role Overview

The Technical & Qualification Training Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and leading training programs for Virginia Transformer’s field service organization. This role ensures that field personnel are technically proficient, properly certified, and continuously developing the skills required to safely and effectively support transformer installation, commissioning, maintenance, and repair.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on technical leader with a passion for developing people, building structured training programs, and driving workforce readiness across a growing field services organization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and implement comprehensive technical training programs for field service personnel
  • Establish and manage qualification and certification programs to ensure workforce readiness and compliance
  • Lead onboarding and ongoing training initiatives for technicians, engineers, and field leaders
  • Partner with engineering, operations, and safety teams to align training with technical standards and best practices
  • Develop training materials, including manuals, SOPs, and hands-on training modules
  • Evaluate training effectiveness through assessments, field performance metrics, and feedback
  • Identify skill gaps and implement targeted training solutions to address development needs
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, industry standards, and internal certification requirements
  • Support field teams with technical guidance and occasional hands-on instruction in field or classroom settings
  • Track and report on training progress, certifications, and workforce capability

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Education, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 7–10+ years of experience in field service, technical training, or workforce development
  • Strong knowledge of power transformers, high-voltage equipment, or heavy industrial systems
  • Experience developing and delivering technical training programs in a field or industrial environment
  • Proven ability to lead training initiatives and influence technical teams

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in transformer manufacturing or utility/power industry
  • Familiarity with certification programs, training systems, or learning management systems (LMS)
  • Strong presentation and instructional skills (classroom and hands-on)
  • Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, effective training
  • Strong organizational and program management skills
