How You’ll Help Transform Healthcare:


The Genetic Counseling Assistant supports clinical and research activities related to cancer genetic counseling with Carilion Clinic. The primary responsibilities of this position are to support Genetic Counselors and other research investigators with activities that take place both virtually and in-person at multiple locations.
- Obtain and evaluate medical and family histories. Synthesize client and family medical information and data obtained from additional research as the basis for counseling and consultation on risk assessment, differential diagnosis, genetic testing options, reproductive options, follow-up recommendations, case management and a comprehensive plan of care for patients.
- Isolating medical records applicable to research; Managing research data and tracking participants; Preparing regulatory and administrative documents and records.
- Triaging cancer genetic counseling referrals and answering questions about cancer genetic counseling services for patients and providers.
- Aiding in preparing patient appointments (i.e., gathering/summarizing medical records and ensuring patients complete pre-visit intake forms).
- Facilitating genetic testing, which may include pre-test consent, completing test request forms, obtaining insurance pre-authorization, arranging sample collection, tracking genetic testing orders, and addressing missing/delayed orders.
- Assisting with clinical documentation, including maintaining and/or building clinical databases
- Directly communicating with patients/families in consultation with genetic counselors and/or other program staff.
- Preparing patient education materials.
- Performs other duties as assigned and/or participates in special projects to support the mission of Carilion Clinic. Aids team members. Accepts alternate assignments, as required.
- Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide equitable care appropriate to the age of the patients served on their assigned unit.
- Demonstrates knowledge and related competencies of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age, specific needs and to provide the equitable care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through continuous development, modeling inclusive behaviors, and proactively managing bias.
What We Require:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in genetics or similar field required; 4 years of applicable education and experience in lieu of a degree will be considered.
Experience: Previous experience in a genetics program preferred.
Licensure, certification, and/or registration: NA
Life Support: N/A
Other Minimum Qualifications: The Genetic Counseling Assistant will be required to undergo in-house training and be familiar with genetic counseling administrative and clinical processes and research protocols. Experience with Microsoft office required.
