Job Title: Biomedical / Safety Technician

Location: Durham, NC 27705

Schedule: Monday – Friday | 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM

Employment Type: Contract

Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated Biomedical / Safety Technician to support environmental health and safety operations. This role is responsible for assisting with the identification, evaluation, and control of workplace safety and health hazards while ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations. The technician will also assist with equipment calibration, inspections, and hazardous waste management across clinical, research, and laboratory environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect, segregate, and manage hazardous chemical waste generated from hospital departments, clinics, and research laboratories
  • Ensure proper handling and disposal of hazardous, pharmaceutical, radiological, and universal wastes
  • Maintain compliance with safety regulations including OSHA, EPA, DOT, NRC, and RCRA
  • Perform routine inspection and calibration of safety and environmental monitoring equipment
  • Maintain accurate records and generate reports using computer systems
  • Support environmental health and safety programs to minimize occupational hazards
  • Communicate policies and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance across departments
  • Assist with safe transport and handling of waste materials and containers

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 1–3 years of relevant experience in Environmental Health & Safety, hazardous waste management, or safety operations
  • DOT and RCRA certification required
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a company vehicle
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations related to hazardous materials
  • Basic understanding of chemistry and chemical properties for proper waste segregation
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to use computer systems to maintain documentation and generate reports

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s Degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or related field
  • Experience working in healthcare, research laboratories, or university environments

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and maneuver containers or drums up to 400 lbs
  • Ability to wear respiratory protection and personal protective equipment when required
  • Ability to work in varying environments, including laboratory, hospital, and controlled safety environments
