The Research Scientist will conduct independent research in the areas of substance misuse, child wellbeing and safety in support of the Ohio START intervention in order to develop new knowledge and answer important scientific research questions.  Responsibilities include developing new extramural proposals for research, publishing results in peer-reviewed journals, training and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.

This position may supervise research assistants to help with data cleaning and coding, presenting at conferences, symposiums, or annual meetings, and attending weekly research meetings. This person must have specialized and substantive experience in quasi-experimental methods in order to conduct complex data analyses that examine the effects of the Ohio Sobriety Treatment and Reducing Trauma (START)  model. Ability to work with child welfare administrative data and have advanced knowledge of database software, like Microsoft Access. It is expected that the successful candidate will seek additional financial support for research. Needs excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Makes scientific decisions regarding the evaluation of the effects of Ohio START on child safety (repeat maltreatment) and permanency (out of home placement): conducts advanced multilevel regression analyses; cleans and codes SACWIS data; provides expertise and guidance on conducting quasi-experimental analyses; supervises research assistants in basic data cleaning and analyses is SPSS, Stata, and R.
  • Interprets data and analyzes results using advanced statistical techniques; identifies, analyzes, and interprets trends or patterns in complex data sets; provides quality assurance of imported data; processes confidential data and information according to guidelines.
  • Writes manuscripts for peer-reviewed publications, policy and practice briefs and white papers; conducts webinars, both as lead and team member. Attends weekly project meetings and scientific conferences as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education Required Doctorate (Academic)

Required Qualifications:

Proven working experience as a data analyst. Advanced knowledge of statistics and spatial statistics, including experience using statistical packages for analyzing datasets (Excel, SPSS, Tata, R, ); Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy. Significant knowledge of and experience using Statewide Automated Child Welfare Information System (SACWIS).

The actual salary will be based on the candidate’s qualifications, internal equity, and the unit’s available budget. This is a term position which is grant funded and is contingent upon external funding availability.
