Job description
GAI Consultants is excited to invite applications for the position of Junior Substation Design Engineer in our Power Delivery Substation Department. This role is available in our Pittsburgh, PA, or Kansas City, KS office. Ideal candidates will have a basic understanding of substation design and some relevant engineering internship or co-op experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Create detailed designs for low to extra-high-voltage substations and switchyards.
- Revise existing drawings for various electrical schematics, layouts, and diagrams, coordinating with CAD operators to ensure high-quality results.
- Integrate physical layouts with protection and control designs.
- Develop control and relay panel layouts along with their specifications.
- Establish project criteria and develop design specifications, including a comprehensive bill of materials.
- Size and design auxiliary systems such as AC/DC load centers, batteries, and chargers.
- Design and size conduits, cables, and backup generators.
- Travel as needed for design reviews and site verification to ensure project success.
- Contribute to the technical development of scope and cost estimates for substation projects.
Required Skills and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited program, with coursework focused on electrical power concepts.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for effective collaboration with team members and clients.
- Strong attention to detail and professionalism, with a client-first mindset.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and strong time management skills.
- Proficient in MS Office applications.
Desired Skills and Experience
- Familiarity with substation design.
- Relevant internships or co-op work experience in the field of engineering.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in a professional office setting for extended periods.
- Frequent use of hands for typing, writing, and office tasks.
- Visual acuity for reading documents and digital screens.
- Occasional standing, walking, and bending as required within the office environment.
- Ability to lift and carry materials or equipment weighing 10-20 pounds.
- Ability to travel for business purposes.

Experience Level
- No prior experience required; this is an entry-level position.
Education Requirement
- B.S. in Engineering or related technical field.
Technical Responsibilities
- Data collection and information gathering.
- Participation in testing and field investigations.
- Basic computations and analysis support.
- Preparation of engineering deliverables.
- Observation of construction activities.
Project and Task Management
- Responsible for personal task management and meeting deadlines.
- No managerial responsibilities at this level.
