Job description

The Process Chemistry group is responsible for inventing and executing chemical processes and preparing active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) to enable toxicology studies, clinical trials, and drug product development for AbbVie’s pre-clinical and clinical candidates. We create valuable intellectual property through composition of matter, chemical processes, and technology, resulting in the development of safe and cost-effective manufacturing processes.

The Process Chemistry group is seeking a highly motivated Associate Scientist II to support process research and development of peptides, small molecules, and ADCs from pre-clinical through early clinical phases. The primary focus of this role will be maintaining peptide synthesis equipment and facilities utilized by development chemists supporting our peptide portfolio. Additionally, the role will involve procurement of chemicals and materials for peptide synthesis as well as performing routine experiments including synthesis and analysis of peptides as well as small molecules and/or ADCs.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • The candidate will maintain laboratories and shared instruments including peptide synthesizers, UPLCs, and LCMSs in working order through periodic routine maintenance.
  • The candidate will manage laboratory equipment and chemical inventories to support the synthesis of peptides and other modalities.
  • The candidate will assist in performing solid phase synthesis of peptides following established protocols to generate material for process development scientists. 
  • With supervision, the candidate will conduct process development and characterization for peptides and other modalities as a member of chemistry teams.
  • The candidate will be responsible for generating and analyzing precise, reliable, and reproducible data in a timely manner.
  • MS in chemistry or related field or bachelor’s degree in chemistry or related field with 3+ yrs industry experience.
  • Experience performing synthetic organic chemistry research in either an academic or industrial setting.
  • Experience with solid phase peptide synthesis is preferred but not required.
  • Excellent written communication, oral communication, organization, and multitasking skills.
  • Proficient with Windows and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
