As a Payments Product Manager at BMO Commercial Bank, you will lead the strategy, delivery, and lifecycle management of modern, API‑enabled and real‑time payment solutions that power embedded finance, client integrations, and next‑generation digital experiences. This role is accountable for translating market and client needs into scalable payment capabilities aligned to Interac e-transfers / Real time Rail, ISO 20022 standards, and API‑first architectures, with full P&L ownership.
You will work at the intersection of payments modernization, digital platforms, and ecosystem partnerships, collaborating across technology, risk, operations, and sales to bring innovative payment products to market that improve speed, transparency, resilience, and client experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the product vision, roadmap, and execution for digital and real‑time payment solutions, including API‑based and embedded payment capabilities across commercial banking portfolios.
- Drive the design and delivery of real‑time payment experiences, ensuring alignment with industry standards such as ISO 20022, evolving clearing rails, and regulatory requirements.
- Lead API strategy and lifecycle management, including onboarding models, versioning, developer experience, performance metrics, and partner integrations.
- Translate client, market, and ecosystem needs into scalable digital payment capabilities that support straight‑through processing, automation, and real‑time insights.
- Maintain end‑to‑end P&L accountability, including pricing, revenue forecasting, cost management (vendor and internal), and margin optimization.
- Conduct market research, competitive benchmarking, and industry analysis across payments modernization, real‑time rails, and API platforms to identify opportunities and gaps.
- Define and monitor key performance metrics (e.g., payment volumes, API usage, latency, uptime, adoption, revenue growth) and implement action plans to optimize performance.
- Partner with Technology and Architecture teams to ensure secure, resilient, and scalable payment platforms, aligned with enterprise standards and future‑state architecture.
- Manage product risk in compliance with legal, regulatory, operational, and technology risk frameworks, including controls related to payments, data, and APIs.
- Lead vendor and fintech partnerships, ensuring contractual obligations are met and solutions align to product strategy and client needs.
- Develop business cases and investment proposals for new payment capabilities, enhancements, and platform modernization initiatives.
- Support sales and client teams with digital payment value propositions, deal support, and client‑facing materials.
- Drive change management, training, and adoption for new digital and real‑time payment capabilities across internal and external stakeholders.
- Weekend or after‑hours work will be required periodically to support product releases, implementations, or critical initiatives.
Qualifications
- 5–7 years of experience in payments, digital product management, or financial services platforms, with increasing accountability.
- Strong knowledge of real‑time payments, payments modernization, and ISO 20022 messaging standards.
- Hands‑on experience with API‑enabled platforms, embedded finance, or developer‑facing products.
- Solid understanding of commercial and retail banking products, payment flows, and end‑to‑end processing.
- Experience building business cases, managing P&L, and driving financial performance.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate data into actionable product insights.
- Experience collaborating with technology, architecture, risk, operations, and external partners.
- Excellent communication and influence skills, with the ability to align senior stakeholders.
- Familiarity with regulatory, compliance, and risk considerations related to payments and digital platforms.

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
