This posting is for an Engineering Technician I position in the Lexington Construction Resident Engineer’s Office. This position performs technical duties, while supporting engineers and other professionals in areas such as construction inspection, materials testing, project surveying, and program/regulatory compliance. Work functions may include inspection for compliance with contract documents, standards, and specifications, testing of materials, review of plans, analysis of engineering related data, and construction surveying/layout. Daily duties will include composing diaries of project operations, completing various material reports, performing construction calculations, documenting pay records, and computer/iPad entry. This position will also assist in all aspects of office engineering and assist the Resident Engineer. POS # 60020732

Additional Expectations:
Must be able to communicate effectively with co-workers, contractors, and the general public. Ability to work safely in both office and outside environments with exposure to hazards on construction sites including heights, highway traffic, and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction. Must be able to perform moderate physical activity including but not limited to walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, standing, and able to lift 50 pounds. Employee will be assigned to various types of projects in Division 9. Must be able to work nights, weekends, as required, for projects assigned to within the Division. Must apply safety philosophy and program to all operations. Other duties include inspecting, ensuring work zone safety, and participating in snow & ice removal. Employee will be subject to emergency callback and inclement weather. The selected applicant will be expected to safety and legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety toe shoes are required. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range:  NC07  $37,377 - $65,408      

    

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction, construction inspection, and/or construction surveying
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment, including iPad and software
  • Experience maintaining standard daily records and reports
  • Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments
  • Knowledge of standards and specifications and plan reading experience

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate’s Degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

If there are no qualified candidates remaining in the applicant pool who meet the minimum Education and Experience or Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required for the position, the agency may consider for this position, a trainee who does not meet the minimum requirements.  Salary for a trainee may be set at a lower level than the classification salary range and recruitment range that is listed in the posting with the salary being adjusted up accordingly when the trainee has obtained the necessary additional education to fully meet the minimum qualifications as outlined in the classification specification.
