Description of Work

You must apply by 11:59 PM prior to the posted closing date.This posting is for an Engineering Technician II in the Winston-Salem Construction #2 Unit. This position serves as a project inspector on roadway and structure projects, supporting higher level technicians and engineers in the administration of construction contracts. This position is responsible for monitoring the contractor’s daily operations to ensure compliance with the contract, plans, and specifications. Specific duties will include observing and documenting the contractor’s operations, making measurements and calculations of pay quantities, and performing standardized material sampling and testing. The selected employee must be proficient in record keeping. This employee must be able to obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing. The employee may be expected to either work independently or as part of a larger team of NCDOT employees and consultant inspectors. This position will ensure compliance with both NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements. Work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Daily duties will include keeping daily inspector diaries on project operations, completing various material reports including materials received, documenting pay records, performing construction calculations, and computer/iPad data and record entry.
Additional Expectations:
This employee will be expected to communicate effectively with co-workers, contractors, and the public. They will be expected to apply math skills such as basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. Knowledge and skill in the use of Microsoft Office suite products, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook is preferred. Experience with iPads/tablets, HiCAMS, and Shareplus/Sharepoint is highly preferred. Must have the ability to make independent decisions using sound engineering judgment. This employee will be expected to apply NCDOT safety standards and program to operations. The employee may be exposed to hazards including construction equipment, high traffic volumes, and heights over water or traffic. The selected employee will be expected to work outside in varying temperature and weather conditions and will be expected to perform moderate physical activity such as standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, and be able to lift 50 pounds. This position may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as required by project workload/staffing requirements on any assigned project in Division 9.
The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle.
Safety-toed shoes required.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC09 / $41,206 - $72,113
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Knowledge in understanding contracts, plans, standards, and specifications.
- Working knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment, software, and mathematical functions.
- Experience reading plans, contracts, and specifications for highway bridge construction.
- Experience in performing inspection, sampling, and testing of materials (concrete, asphalt density) to ensure compliance with NCDOT specifications.
- Working knowledge of pay record book entries and material received reports.
Minimum Education and Experience

Associate degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
