JOB SUMMARY

A Crime Laboratory Technician Supervisor supervises the collection and investigation of physical evidence from crime scenes for laboratory and court presentation. Work of this class involves supervising crime laboratory technician personnel.

Incumbents receive general supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work rotating shifts and are on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Work is performed at crime locations where such conditions as the seasonal extremes of weather, dangerous City districts and violent or hostile individuals are encountered. Work requires moderate physical exertion necessary to lift and move large and heavy materials and objects from crime sites.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:

EDUCATION: Have a bachelor's degree in criminalistics, chemistry, biology, physics or a related science from an accredited college or university.

AND

EXPERIENCE: Have three years of experience in the detection, collection and preservation of criminal evidence for court use.

OR

NOTE EQUIVALENCIES: Have an equivalent combination of education and experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES: Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license, or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management is required.

PROVISIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE OR LEARNER PERMITS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the procedures and methods of investigating crime scenes.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of chemical analyses, biology and physics.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of criminalistics.

  • Knowledge of the rules of evidence.

  • Ability to perform chemical and other laboratory tests.

  • Ability to perform in unusual or chaotic conditions.

  • Ability to deal effectively with the public and departmental personnel.

  • Ability to prepare accurate, concise and clear technical records and reports and to maintain records of evidence.

  • Ability to testify effectively in court.

  • Supervisory ability.

Background Check                                        

NOTE: Those Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointments to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed. 

Probation 

All people, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory one-year probation. 

Eligibility 

Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.                  

                                           

Education Accreditation 

Applicants’ education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency. Evaluation agencies information may be obtained at www.naces.org.
