Harperinsure
Accounting & Finance Manager
Salary
Job description
THE PROBLEM
36 million businesses in America need insurance—it's not optional. 77% are underinsured. 40% have no coverage at all. The distribution system failed them: too slow, too opaque, too confusing.
Over 90% of commercial insurance is still human-led. We're building the inverse: 90%+ AI-led, pushing toward the higher 90s. Not by patching legacy workflows—by building AI that makes humans more effective, improves the customer experience, and eliminates friction at every step.
We're adding ~1,000 customers per month. We've grown 100x since last year. We're looking to do even more this year—and that's why we're hiring.
We don't have a finance department. You're building it.
THE THESIS
Growing 100x in a year means the finance function has to evolve just as fast. We have the fundamentals in place, but the company is scaling faster than the infrastructure behind it. What works for a 20-person team doesn't work for a 100-person one. Someone has to take what exists, build what's missing, and design the financial operating system that carries us through the next 10x.
Every process you design, every control you implement, every report you build becomes the foundation the company runs on. This is the role where you shape how Harper understands its own business—unit economics, cash deployment, capital allocation—and make sure the numbers are airtight as the stakes get higher.
THE ROLE
You're the finance function on the ground. You'll work directly with our CFO, a seasoned finance executive who has scaled multiple companies through IPO, and you'll be their trusted operator at Harper. The first 6–9 months are heavily focused on building: processes, controls, systems, and the financial infrastructure that matches the pace of the business. You'll inherit existing work and team members, take what's here, and professionalize it.
This is a rare opportunity to learn how institutional-grade finance gets built at a high-growth company, with direct mentorship from someone who has done it before. If you execute well, the path is clear, this role is designed to grow into a Head of Finance as the company scales.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Own the close — Full ownership of monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting close; P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow statements
- Build financial infrastructure from scratch — Design and implement processes, controls, and systems; this is the primary focus in the first 6-9 months
- Manage cash and treasury — Monitor cash positions, forecast liquidity needs, ensure funds are allocated appropriately across accounts
- Run budgeting and forecasting — Build and maintain the annual budget, rolling forecasts, and variance analysis
- Support board and investor reporting — Prepare financial packages, presentation materials, and investor updates
- Build dashboards that drive decisions — KPI development and financial reporting that supports executive and board-level decision making
- Oversee payroll and AP/AR — Ensure accurate and timely payroll processing; manage vendor payments and intercompany reconciliations
- Find automation opportunities — Identify and implement ways to reduce manual work and improve accuracy across the finance function
- Manage and grow the team — Lead existing resources, bring in new ones as needed, and build the function as the company scales
YOU MIGHT BE A FIT IF...
- You've built financial systems and processes before or you've been the person holding one together when it should have fallen apart
- You're a self-starter who identifies problems and drives solutions without waiting for direction
- You're comfortable operating in ambiguity and creating structure where none exists
- You can translate complex financial information for non-finance audiences—clearly and without jargon
- You have exceptional attention to detail but don't lose sight of the big picture
- You're collaborative and low-ego, you work well across teams and know when to ask for help
- You want to be at a company where the finance function actually matters, not one where it's an afterthought
REQUIREMENTS
- 5–7 years of progressive accounting and finance experience, with direct ownership of a full finance function
- Demonstrated ability to build financial processes and systems in a fast-moving environment
- Strong FP&A skills: budgeting, forecasting, scenario modeling, and business partnering
- Exceptional attention to detail with the ability to manage competing priorities
- Strong written and verbal communication
- Based in San Francisco or willing to relocate immediately
NICE TO HAVE
- CPA
- Prior startup or high-growth company experience
- Experience with trust accounting, insurance, brokerage, or other regulated financial environments
- Experience managing and developing others—direct reports or external resources
COMPENSATION
- Salary: $140,000–$180,000 + performance bonuses & equity
- Location & Schedule: In-office, San Francisco. This is a high-intensity environment and the work reflects it.
BENEFITS
- Health, dental, and vision insurance
- Commuter benefits
- Team meals and snacks
THE PROCESS
- People screen — Initial fit and alignment
- Founder screen — Skills and culture fit
- Super day — See how you operate in real time
