About Team:

The Catalog forms the backbone of Walmart’s digital ecosystem. It plays a pivotal role in managing the entire lifecycle of product data — from ingesting items provided by partners, to enriching and standardizing the information, and finally serving accurate and high-quality content to the website and downstream systems.
Maintaining such a large and diverse catalog comes with its own set of complex and fascinating challenges. These include classifying products accurately, identifying and eliminating duplicates, resolving data mismatches, and ensuring consistency and completeness of content across millions of items. Delivering a clean, reliable, and scalable catalog is essential to providing customers with a seamless and trustworthy shopping experience.

What you'll do:

• Lead architecture and design of large-scale, distributed systems across multiple teams

• Drive end-to-end delivery of critical platforms (design → build → operate)

• Define and enforce engineering standards, design patterns, and best practices

• Partner with Product and Business to translate requirements into scalable solutions

• Make high-impact technical decisions under ambiguity

• Ensure performance, reliability, security, and cost optimization at scale

• Review code/designs and provide hands-on guidance for complex problems

• Drive operational excellence (CI/CD, monitoring, incident response)

• Influence technical direction across orgs without direct authority

• Mentor senior engineers and raise overall engineering bar

What you'll bring:

• 12–16+ years of experience building high-scale, distributed systems

• Deep expertise in system design, backend engineering, and architecture

• Strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and problem solving

• Proven ability to lead cross-team initiatives and drive alignment

• Hands-on proficiency in modern tech stack (microservices, cloud, data platforms)

• Experience with performance tuning, scalability, and resiliency patterns

• Ability to simplify complex problems and design pragmatic solutions

• Strong communication skills to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders

• Track record of mentorship and developing senior talent

• Ownership mindset with focus on business impact, not just technology

Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 5 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
Option 2: 7 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.

Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 3 years' experience in software engineering or related area., We value candidates with a background in creating inclusive digital experiences, demonstrating knowledge in implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and integrating digital accessibility seamlessly. The ideal candidate would have knowledge of accessibility best practices and join us as we continue to create accessible products and services following Walmart’s accessibility standards and guidelines for supporting an inclusive culture.
