Job Overview

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under general supervision of Automotive Maintenance Supervisor or General/ARFF Equipment Supervisor, trains or performs maintenance and repair on a wide variety of automotive equipment. 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Uses test equipment to troubleshoot problems, determines corrective action, makes repairs or adjustments and road tests vehicles or equipment to make certain that problem or condition has been corrected.

  • Performs tune-ups, replaces parts and makes adjustments using test equipment and technical manuals.

  • Repairs electrical, fuel, electronic ignition, emission, and exhaust systems.

  • Inspects and makes repairs to hydraulic systems on equipment; replaces components as required.

  • Inspects and replaces or repairs brake systems on vehicles and equipment.

  • Makes repairs or complete overhauls on gasoline and diesel engines and alternative fuels.

  • Repairs or replaces front-end parts on vehicles and equipment; aligns front end.

  • Repairs, replaces and services transmissions, drive shafts, U-joints and differential axles.

  • Repairs carburetors, generator-alternators, ball joints, shocks, wheel bearings/seals, starters, fuel pumps and other equipment.

  • Services and makes repairs to vehicle air conditioning systems.

  • Trains to repair Crash/Fire/Rescue equipment such as high-pressure plumbing and pumps, foam induction and powder firefighting and hydraulic systems.

  • When assigned to Bus Maintenance positions, diagnoses, and repairs medium and heavy-duty trucks, shuttle buses and air brakes.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of high school curriculum or equivalent.

  • Three (3) plus years of experience as an automotive mechanic.

  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted for the above.

  • For Aircraft/Fire/Rescue; Heavy Equipment; Winter Weather Equipment must have a Valid Class B Commercial driver's license with a passenger (P) endorsement (driver's licenses with an "L" restriction are not acceptable) must be obtained within 6 months of employment in this classification. Failure to obtain this license within 6 months will result in termination.

  • Ability to pass a medical physical examination.

  • Possession of a valid Class C driver’s license.

  • Ability to obtain an EPA 608 Refrigerant certification within 90 days of employment in this position.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of methods, materials and tools used in repair of automotive equipment.

  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with servicing vehicles and equipment.

  • Skill in tune-up of electrical/fuel systems.

  • Skill in diagnosing and repairing a variety of types of automotive equipment – including small vehicles, medium and large size trucks, and bus equipment.

  • Skill in repair/overhaul of power trains (gasoline, diesel and alternative fuels) engine, transmissions and differentials.

  • Skill in repair/replacement of components such as starters, generators/alternators, carburetors fuel pumps.

  • Ability to test and diagnose malfunctioning equipment and systems.

  • Ability to operate automotive machine shop equipment such as lathe, press, gas and electric welding apparatus, drill press and related equipment.

  • Basic knowledge of computer applications.

  • Ability to work shifts, including nights and weekends.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Incumbent must possess a set of mechanic's tools to perform skilled work.

  • Must obtain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) Airport Identification/Access Badge (badge) in accordance with Department of Homeland Security Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requirements in Chapter 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 1500 et al., and DFW Airport’s Airport Security Program within thirty (30) days from date of employment and maintain qualification for a SIDA badge upon each badge renewal.

  • This is a Department of Transportation (DOT) designated safety sensitive position as defined in DFW Airport’s Drug and Alcohol Administrative Policy and Procedure. Applicants selected for this position will be required to pass drug and alcohol tests prior to employment and to submit to drug and alcohol screening on a random basis during the length of their employment in the DOT safety sensitive position.

  • This is a designated Essential Employee position as defined in DFW Airport’s Categories and Classifications Administrative Policy and Procedure. An essential employee is one whose attendance is required to maintain airport operations during an emergency or inclement weather situation.

  • Must be able to meet all initial and recurrent training requirements in accordance with Title 14 CFR part 139 and administrative Policy AO.014.01, Ground Vehicle Driver Training for Air Operations Area (AOA) within 30 days of assignment to a driving position and before being permitted to operate the vehicle without the direct supervision and presence of a co-operator qualified under this requirement.

DESIRABLE:

  • If assigned to Bus Maintenance shop, experience diagnosing and repairing Thermo King A/C systems.

EFFORTS:

  • Works in a maintenance environment.

  • Is subject to inclement weather conditions and vehicle exhaust fumes.

  • Performs heavy manual labor, frequently exerting forces equivalent to lifting 50 pounds and occasionally exerting forces equivalent to lifting up to 100 pounds.

  • Works in awkward positions such as stooping, squatting or with arms above the head for prolonged periods of time.

  • Works with hand tools, power tools and pneumatic tools.

  • Exchanges information in person, with two-way radio and by telephone.

  • Road tests vehicles and drives to locations on and off the Airport.

  • Works with lubricants and solvents and around grease, grime and dirt involving heavy exposure to the skin.
