Why this role matters

As a Financial Counsellor, you will make a genuine difference in people’s lives. You will support individuals and families who are experiencing financial hardship, or who are working to prevent it, by walking alongside them during challenging times. You will provide compassionate, non-judgmental financial counselling, developing tailored, community member centred case plans that empower people to regain control of their finances.

About the role

Through practical guidance, advocacy and support, as a Financial Counsellor you will help alleviate immediate financial stress, build long-term financial resilience, and open pathways to improved wellbeing. Your work will not only ease financial hardship, but also contribute to stronger mental health, restored dignity, and greater confidence for people as they move toward a more secure future.

Reporting to the Team Leader, we have a permanent part time position available with flexible hours offering 0.6 FTE - 0.8 FTE, located in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

How you will make an impact

  • Build respectful, empowering relationships that promote community member participation and self‑determination
  • Deliver holistic, community‑member‑centred casework grounded in relational, missional and professional practice
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to ensure high‑quality, coordinated service delivery
  • Develop, implement and regularly review individual case plans in partnership with community members
  • Support access to services and community supports, including advocacy where required
  • Deliver services in line with The Salvation Army Practice Framework, legal requirements and quality standards
  • Maintain accurate records, monitor outcomes, and contribute to continuous quality improvement and feedback processes

What you will bring

  • Hold a Diploma of Financial Counselling or are currently enrolled.
  • Relevant experience in a social service environment and/or a good understanding of issues that can cause financial hardship and financial exclusion.
  • Demonstrated capability to meet deadlines and work under conflicting time pressures.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in working within a Windows Office environment.
  • Highly effective communication skills and negotiation skills
  • Current and valid VIC Employee Working with Children Check
  • VIC Driver’s Licence

Conditions
Salary and conditions are in accordance with the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Award – Level (3, 4 or 5) based on qualification and experience.

ABOUT YOU

  • Diploma of Community Services – Financial Counselling and have a minimum of 2 years experience in financial counselling
  • Member of the Financial & Consumer Rights Council (FCRC)
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a counselling framework is highly regarded
  • Knowledge of the relevant legislation and information pertaining to financial issues or any other para legal experience
