Job description

Position Summary...

Walmart is seeking a Senior Manager, Automation Engineering - Modular Health Analytics & Simulation to drive data-driven insights and simulation capabilities that directly reduce out-of-stock events and improve on-shelf availability across our store network. Reporting to the Director of Technology Operations - Modular Health, this role bridges analytics, measurement science, and simulation modeling to ensure every investment in shelf health is quantified, optimized, and scaled with confidence.

You will own the analytics and simulation engine behind Walmart's Modular Health program - building trusted datasets, executive dashboards, pilot measurement frameworks, and simulation models that inform enterprise-level decisions on shelf-scanning solutions including fixed infrastructure, mobile robotics, and associate-enabled capture. Your work will directly influence how we allocate capital, scale pilots, and recapture sales.

What you'll do...

  • Analytics & Data Management: Build and maintain store- and shelf-level datasets that integrate inventory accuracy signals, nil pick events, restocking cycle times, and customer behavior metrics into unified, trusted data assets.
  • Reporting & Dashboards: Develop executive-ready dashboards and recurring reporting packages that surface on-shelf availability, nil pick rates, inventory accuracy, and sales recapture trends with consistent metric definitions and automated refreshes.
  • Pilot Measurement & Experimentation: Design and execute rigorous pre/post and test-vs-control measurement frameworks for Modular Health pilots - defining cohorts, success metrics, and controlling for bias and seasonality across store populations.
  • Automation & Pipeline Development: Develop automated pipelines to standardize KPI calculations, quality assurance checks, and repeatable analytical outputs for stakeholder consumption.
  • Simulation & Digital Twins: Lead the development of store-level simulations and digital twins that model shelf replenishment flows, out-of-stock propagation, and intervention scenarios to optimize deployment strategies before capital commitment.
  • Optimization & What-If Modeling: Build scenario, sensitivity, and what-if analysis capabilities to estimate ROI under different assumptions for shelf type, category velocity, store format, and solution mix.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership: Partner with Store Operations, Merchandising, Technology, Product, and Finance stakeholders to translate business questions into analyses and clear recommendations. Document methodology, metric logic, and assumptions.
  • ROI & Financial Modeling: Develop financial models linking inventory accuracy improvements to sales lift, reduced nil picks, labor efficiency, shrink impact, and capital efficiency. Own KPI governance and metric definitions across the program.
  • Team Development: Mentor and develop analysts and engineers on the team, fostering a culture of analytical rigor, reproducible work, and clear storytelling.

What You'll Bring:

  • 6-10 years of experience in analytics, simulation, data science, or operations within retail, supply chain, or large-scale environments.
  • Strong SQL skills for analytic modeling, data validation, and querying at enterprise scale.
  • Proficiency in Python or equivalent for data transformation, automation, simulation, and optimization workflows.
  • Experience with business intelligence and dashboard platforms, including data modeling and dashboard design for executive audiences.
  • Experience designing and executing experimentation and causal measurement (pre/post analysis, A/B testing, control selection, bias mitigation).
  • Experience building simulation models or digital twins to inform operational or capital investment decisions.
  • Familiarity with optimization approaches (scenario modeling, sensitivity analysis, objective function formulation).
  • Strong communication skills: ability to distill complex analysis into concise insights, clear assumptions, and action-oriented recommendations.
  • Experience managing cross-functional projects with multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Understanding of store operations, replenishment systems, modular space planning, or inventory management.
  • Familiarity with retail KPIs such as on-shelf availability, nil pick rate, inventory accuracy, restocking cycle time, and sales recapture.
  • Experience with computer vision, sensor data, or physical AI systems in retail or logistics environments.
  • Background in machine learning concepts and their practical application to operational problems.
  • Experience building recurring business review reporting packages and establishing metric governance across a program.
  • Retail analytics experience with customer behavior metrics (basket size, transaction time, repeat-customer behavior, substitution patterns).

Success Measures:

  • On-time, high-quality weekly and monthly reporting that drives operational decisions at Director and VP level.
  • Faster, repeatable pilot readouts with consistent methodology - reducing time-to-insight for scaling decisions.
  • Simulation models that accurately predict deployment ROI within defined confidence intervals before capital commitment.
  • Clear, actionable insights that directly influence pilot scaling, solution selection, and modular optimization strategies.
  • Measurable improvement in nil pick rate, on-shelf availability, and sales recapture attributable to analytics-driven interventions.
  • Strong cross-functional stakeholder satisfaction and trust in data quality and analytical rigor.

Who we're looking for:

  • A builder who loves turning messy data into clear, trusted decision-making tools.
  • Equally comfortable writing code and presenting to senior leaders.
  • Energized by the challenge of proving whether a solution actually works at scale.
  • A systems thinker who connects simulation outputs to financial models to operational workflows.
  • Passionate about eliminating preventable out-of-stocks and improving the shopping experience for millions of customers.
  • Biased toward reproducible, well-documented work over heroic one-off analyses.
