The Role
General Motors is driving the transformation of the automotive industry through electrification, central compute platforms, and advanced autonomous technologies. The Compute & Connectivity Hardware team leads the electrical design and integration of next-generation ECUs supporting GM’s Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) architecture.
We are seeking an Senior Hardware Design Engineer - Electronic Component Library to serve as the technical leader for GM’s electronic component library. This role is responsible for establishing best-in-class processes, creating and approving schematic symbols and PCB footprints, and building a scalable, high-quality library infrastructure that supports global hardware development.
You will play a critical role in selecting components for the GM library, increasing component creation throughput, elevating library standards, and serving as a key bridge between the GM Component Library and future PLM systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and approve schematic symbols, PCB footprints (land patterns), pad stacks, and component cells aligned with industry and GM standards
- Own and curate a section of the GM Electronic Component Catalog and become the company expert for that class of component
- Maintain relationships with supply base component suppliers
- Monitor industry roadmap for your assigned components
- Participate in the development of best practices, governance, and quality standards for GM’s electronic component library
- Collaborate with circuit designers, system engineers, packaging engineers, purchasing, and supply chain teams to support PCB component selection
- Improve processes to enhance library quality, reduce costs, and increase efficiency
- Support integration between the component library and enterprise PLM systems
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
- Minimum of 7–10 years of professional experience in electronic hardware design, component engineering, or library development
- Demonstrated experience creating and approving schematic symbols, PCB footprints, and component models
- Strong understanding of component standards, PCB layout considerations, and manufacturing constraints
- Proven ability to work independently, make technical decisions, and provide guidance to engineering teams
- Experience collaborating across engineering, purchasing, and supplier organizations
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing electronic component symbols, cells, and pad stacks
- Experience in schematic capture and/or PCB layout design
- Background in Siemens Xpedition library development and tool chain
- Experience as an electronic hardware component engineer
- Familiarity with enterprise PLM systems
