Product Mechanical Designer Engineer

Description -

Job Summary

The Product Mechanical Designer Engineer is responsible for designing and delivering robust, manufacturable mechanical solutions for HP products from concept through production. This role partners closely with cross-functional teams (Industrial Design, EE, Manufacturing, Quality, Suppliers) to ensure design intent is met while achieving cost, schedule, reliability, and user experience targets.

What a Product Mechanical Designer Engineer does at HP:

  • Designs and develops mechanical components and subsystems for consumer and/or commercial products, including plastics, sheet metal, and electro-mechanical assemblies, from concept through production.
  • Translates industrial design concepts into robust, manufacturable mechanical designs that meet product requirements for cost, quality, reliability, and performance.
  • Performs detailed design work using 3D CAD tools (e.g., Creo/ProE), including part modelling, tolerance analysis, stack-up studies, and drawing release.
  • Responsible for 2D engineering drawings, including creation, review, and release of detailed drawings with appropriate GD&T to clearly communicate design intent for manufacturing and tooling.
  • Applies Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and Design for Reliability (DFR) principles throughout product development.
  • Develops and executes validation and test plans to verify form, fit, and function, including shock, vibration, thermal performance, reliability, and acoustics.
  • Conducts feasibility studies, design margin analysis, and prototype evaluations to support design decisions and product readiness.
  • Performs root cause analysis of design and production issues and drives corrective actions through cross-functional collaboration.
  • Works closely with industrial designers, electrical engineers, thermal engineers, suppliers, and manufacturing teams to ensure successful product integration and launch.
  • Supports prototype builds, tooling reviews, and product qualification, including supplier engagement and factory ramp activities.
  • Manages engineering changes (DCN/ECR), documentation, and configuration control throughout the product lifecycle.

Individuals who do well in this role at HP, usually possess:

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related disciplines.
  • Typically 2–4 years of experience in product mechanical design, preferably in consumer or electronics products.
  • Fresh graduates with strong mechanical design fundamentals, hands-on project experience, and a passion for product development are also encouraged to apply.

Technical Skills

  • Experience with ProEngineer/Creo or other 3D CAD tools as a mechanical design tool.
  • Strong proficiency in 2D engineering drawings, including GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing), to effectively communicate design intent for manufacturing and tooling.
  • Understanding of sheet metal and plastic part design and associated tooling and manufacturing processes.
  • Solid fundamentals in tolerance analysis and form/fit/function validation.
  • Basic knowledge of engineering simulation tools (e.g., FEA, optical simulation) to support design analysis and decision-making.

Core Competencies

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a structured approach to troubleshooting and root-cause analysis.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills across cross-functional and global teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deliver quality results within project timelines.
  • Self-driven, detail-oriented, and passionate about product design and innovation.
