Job description
The Landfill Head will be responsible for the overall management, supervision, and performance of the landfill site, ensuring that all operations are carried out in a safe, compliant, efficient, and cost-effective manner. This includes overseeing landfill operations, staff management, regulatory compliance, environmental monitoring, site development, and liaison with statutory bodies and corporate leadership.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Operational Leadership
Plan, organize, and control all site activities including landfill operations, waste acceptance, treatment, and disposal.
Supervise and support all functional departments: Operations, Mechanical, Electrical, EHS, QA/QC Lab, and Admin.
Oversee day-to-day functioning of SD Plant, INC Plant, and drum disposal units, ensuring optimum utilization and regulatory compliance.
Monitor plant input efficiencies (e.g., coal, power) and strive for waste processing cost optimization.
Ensure proper functioning of utilities – roads, weighbridges, drainage, stormwater, and lighting.
2. Regulatory Compliance & Environmental Monitoring
Ensure strict compliance with Hazardous Waste Management Rules and other applicable regulations from CPCB, GPCB, and MoEFCC.
Maintain and submit statutory reports such as Form 3, Form 4, Annual Returns, manifests, etc.
Coordinate inspections and audits by environmental authorities and ensure zero non-conformities.
Oversee groundwater, leachate, and ambient air monitoring and initiate corrective actions if required.
Ensure all protocols for waste acceptance, treatment, and landfill usage are followed and documented.
3. Health, Safety & Risk Management
Implement and enforce robust EHS policies and procedures across all site functions.
Conduct regular safety audits, toolbox talks, risk assessments, and emergency preparedness drills.
Ensure 100% usage of PPE and safe working conditions for all staff and contractors.
Lead incident investigations and ensure corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) are executed.
Maintain zero lost-time incidents (LTI) and actively monitor near-miss reporting.
4. People Management & Development
Lead a multidisciplinary team including engineers, technicians, operators, and support staff.
Conduct regular performance reviews, promote a performance-driven culture, and address training needs.
Ensure optimal manpower planning and shift scheduling in coordination with HR.
Build a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
5. Maintenance & Infrastructure
Oversee preventive and breakdown maintenance of all plant equipment and site infrastructure.
Monitor and review shutdown maintenance schedules and activities to minimize downtime.
Ensure readiness of landfill infrastructure, including HDPE liners, leachate collection systems, and gas venting systems.
6. Coordination & Reporting
Coordinate with HO teams (Marketing, Finance, Accounts, Purchase, Logistics) for effective operations.
Ensure timely preparation and dispatch of invoices and waste acceptance/rejection protocols.
Submit weekly, monthly, and quarterly performance reports to management.
Ensure seamless coordination during client visits, audits, and government inspections.
7. Financial & Cost Management
Prepare and monitor site budgets, operating costs, and resource utilization.
Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising safety or compliance.
Track key input costs (coal, chemicals, energy) and improve consumption efficiency.
B.E./B.Tech in Environmental Engineering / Chemical Engineering is preferred
Postgraduate degree/diploma in Environmental Management is an added advantage
Minimum 15 years of experience in hazardous waste management, landfill operations, or related industrial operations
Minimum 5 years in a leadership role managing a similar facility
