What’s the role

The Economist role is a key enabler in achieving Shell’s objectives, providing high quality economic advice and decision analysis in support of Shell’s business opportunities.

As part of the Australia Economics team and Commercial community in Brisbane, you will interface with key customers across QGC & Arrow in various locations and businesses as required. The team enables quality business decisions, by serving as “guardians of value”, decision analysts, and trusted advisors.

What you’ll be doing

You will be responsible for following the Decision Quality model to deliver 1) quality frames and economic evaluations, 2) robust and fit-for-purpose uncertainty and risk analysis (decision analysis support), 3) effective and timely challenge, guidance, and support in making quality investment decisions, 4) Economic discipline sub-team participation.

More specifically:

Operational:

  • Deliver timely, professional valuation products and insights for decision making forums, investment reviews and annual operating plan / reserves submissions.

  • Challenge, steer and assess decisions involving various project decisions (e.g. concept selection, final investment decisions, commercial negotiations, exploration bid rounds, portfolio activities, fiscal shaping etc.).

  • Prioritize assigned workloads, potentially from multiple clients and timely delivery of fit-for-purpose deliverables with support of the East Economics Team Lead.

Functional

  • Implement globally applied best practices and lessons that are distributed across the Global and Shell Australia Economic Community and partner with various data providers and key stakeholders in establishing and maintaining these practices.

  • Some support of, and participation in, global economics discipline improvement efforts (Decision Analysis; Standards and Guidelines; Tools; Knowledge Management etc.).

  • Align with stakeholders to meet short-term project needs while building long term functional health (e.g. deliver own accountabilities while also growing skills, competencies and sharing practices worth replicating).

You will thrive in operating with a growing level of independence, consistently applying best practices while contributing to complex opportunities. You are encouraged to collaborate with and seek guidance from experienced colleagues, proactively identify ways to enhance how work is done, and continuously strengthen your leadership capabilities.

What you bring

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • Significant experience working within a commercially oriented consulting or corporate environment.

  • Degree in Business, Economics/Finance, Mathematics, Engineering or Geoscience with direct experience in Energy markets and Value Chains (preferred)

  • Analytical & Commercial Acumen: High numeracy and strong analytical capability with the ability to organize, evaluate, and clearly communicate the impact of decisions to team members, asset management, partners, and other stakeholders. Strong understanding of discounted cashflow based performance measures required; some accounting, treasury, market risk management or corporate finance knowledge is an advantage.

  • Asset & Evaluation Experience: Experience with financial modelling supporting Asset valuations, New Business Development (NBD), and/or Exploration screening and evaluations, including application of Decision Quality techniques to projects of moderate complexity.

  • Technical & Tools Proficiency: Advanced Excel skills, with experience building financial models an advantage.

  • Collaboration & Delivery Mindset: Self‑starter with sound judgment, strong interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills, and the passion, curiosity and drive  to dive into analytical detail and surface clear, actionable insights. Results‑driven team player comfortable multitasking in a fast‑paced environment and delivering high‑quality outputs under tight timelines.

After you submit your application, you will receive an email providing a link to an online assessment that is a mandatory part of the process and has a validity period. The email will come from Shell (HireVue) - please check your spam/junk mailbox if you do not see the email. Once completed, your application will be reviewed to determine next steps. Shell in Australia

Shell has operated in Australia since 1901. From operating Australia’s first oil refinery, which was central to meeting Australia’s fuel needs, to fuelling the first Qantas commercial flight in the 1920s, to playing a foundation role in building some of Australia’s largest and most innovative natural resource developments.

Throughout this 125-year relationship the needs of our customers and the nation have changed and we have continued transforming our portfolio to meet these needs. Today, we are a leading natural gas producer and are playing our part in the transition to a low-carbon future by investing in the power sector, renewable energy sources and carbon abatement activities.

Shell has a significant Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) business in Australia that makes a valuable contribution to today’s energy supply. This integrated gas portfolio includes our two Shell-operated gas production and liquefaction businesses, Shell QGC in Queensland and Prelude Floating LNG offshore in Western Australia, and our joint venture interests in Gorgon and North West Shelf in Western Australia and Arrow Energy in Queensland.

Today, Shell’s portfolio in Australia also includes zero- and low-carbon energy businesses such as commercial and industrial retailer, Shell Energy carbon farming specialist, Select Carbon the 120MW Gangarri solar development; residential energy retailer, Powershop Australia a 49% stake in WestWind Australia a 50% share of Kondinin Energy and several grid-scale Battery Energy Storage Solutions projects. High quality Shell branded fuels and lubricants are available right across Australia, through an exclusive brand license arrangement with Viva Energy.
