The Department of Epidemiology in the Milken Institute School of Public Health is launching the quantitative data collection component of its ongoing annual behavioral surveillance study in conjunction with its Public Health/Academic Partnership with the DC Health HIV/AIDS/Hepatitis/STD and TB Administration.

Position Specific Summary

The Department is seeking multiple Public Health students to work part-time as Field Interviewers (FI) for the data collection cycle focusing on men who have sex with men (MSM). Together with the GWU faculty and staff, the FI will assist research faculty and staff in implementing the study. Under the supervision of the Field Supervisor and in concert with the Principal Investigator and Study Coordinator, the FI will conduct street-based outreach and recruitment, collect data using a computerized interview system on a tablet and contribute to field research activities and data collection for the study in a mobile van setting, including but not limited to survey data collection and HIV counseling and testing. FIs may also participate in other in-person research support activities as requested or other specialized study activities, such as recruitment and HIV testing. The majority of the work will take place off campus. Flexible hours, responsible research demeanor, and willingness to work in and travel to a variety of locations are required. This position is projected to begin in late May. Spanish speakers are strongly encouraged to apply.Required:

  • Public health research experience; preference given to GWU Milken Institute School of Public Health graduate students;
  • High attention to detail and ability to follow protocols;
  • Ability to work autonomously when needed but also functions well in a team;
  • Ability to work flexible hours, specifically evenings, late nights, and weekends;
  • Ability to provide own transportation to and from the study sites;
  • Professional demeanor, conduct and behavior Preferred:
  • Previous experience in interviewing in the HIV public health research context;
  • Previous experience in conducting research interviews in urban settings;
  • Familiarity with HIV and/or STI testing/ pre- and post-test counseling;
  • Knowledge of computer assisted data collection and conduct of structured interviews;
  • Familiarity with or previous experience working with MSM;
  • Proficient verbal and written skills; comfortable in academic, professional, and healthcare settings; excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Spanish language fluency desired but not required.

Standard Position Description

The student will perform basic administrative and research tasks under the guidance of a faculty member or research coordinator. Tasks may include: assisting with experiments, coding, data entry, and data cleaning, preparing research/documents for articles, reports, and/or presentations. Students may also help provide information for literature reviews, draft summaries, and create graphs and figures. Special projects or other duties may be assigned related to specific departmental/faculty needs.
