Job description

Equinox Engineering Ltd. is a Calgary-based EPCM firm and a market leader in oil and gas processing. We specialize in facilities design, project implementation, and operational support for natural gas, conventional oil, and heavy oil projects. In addition to our strong presence in the energy sector, Equinox is rapidly emerging as a leading EPCM provider for data centers across North America. With the growth of this booming sector, alongside our ongoing oil and gas projects, the demand for a Senior Electrical Engineer - Power Generation with a focus on Mission Critical power delivery has never been greater.

Summary: Power generation is the largest and most critical component in data center design. With power requirements ranging from 100MW to 2,000MW, we are seeking Electrical Engineers with experience in the design of high-voltage power generation systems utilizing turbine generators in conjunction with grid connections as well as power distribution to support data center loads

The Senior Electrical Engineer - Power Generation will be responsible for the design, development, and procurement activities of electrical equipment for various projects. This role also ensures that all electrical specifications, codes, standards, and QA/QC procedures are properly followed and enforced. In addition, the Senior Electrical Engineer will provide technical support and leadership to the electrical team throughout the design, construction, commissioning, and start-up phases of the projects. This position will report to local offices in either Pittsburgh, PA or Denver, CO.

  • Coordinate all activities within the electrical engineering discipline for the project.
  • Perform detailed design, sizing, and calculations, and verify/check designs completed by others.
  • Ensure effective coordination with other disciplines across all project phases.
  • Review, check, and approve all engineering deliverables produced by the discipline team.
  • Prepare key electrical documentation including single line diagrams, wiring schematics, datasheets, vendor squad checks, procurement documentation, and reports related to electrical system studies (e.g., short circuit calculations, time-current coordination, load flow, motor starting, and harmonic analysis using SKM and ETAP software).
  • Develop power distribution architectures meeting Tier, redundancy, and availability requirements (N, N+1, 2N).
  • Design utility services, substations, MV/LV switchgear, UPS systems, generator plants, and distribution systems.
  • Contribute electrical input to the Design Basis Memorandum (DBM), Project Execution Plan (PEP), and detailed scopes of work.
  • Lead the development of electrical designs for projects and proposals.
  • Establish detailed engineering design criteria.
  • Analyze vendor and subcontractor designs for compliance and technical accuracy.
  • Review the work of others to ensure design integrity and consistency throughout the project.
  • Take a lead role in the preparation of electrical Material Take-Offs (MTOs) and man-hour estimates.
  • Prepare engineering man-hour estimates and contribute to overall project scheduling.
  • Prepare and review electrical single line diagrams, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
  • Develop and evaluate electrical equipment and construction specifications.
  • Provide engineering support for procurement activities, including MRQ/MRP development, technical bid evaluations, and vendor drawing reviews.
  • Support the development of Construction Work Packages (CWPs), including project descriptions, construction specifications, IFC drawings, and material lists.
  • Provide engineering support during construction, including field engineering, inspections, and specialized studies.
  • Must possess strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in high, medium, and low voltage power generation (using single or combined-cycle turbine generators) and distribution design.
  • Strong knowledge of protective relaying, generator control systems, and electrical equipment sizing and specifications.
  • Experienced in electrical safety regulations and code compliance requirements.
  • Ability to effectively coordinate with other engineering disciplines.
  • Experience supporting hyperscale or colocation clients
  • Experience as Electrical Discipline Lead or Engineer of Record

Education and Qualifications
