The UHealth Laboratories Department at the University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a  
Full Time Histotechnologist 3 in the UTower Hospital.

CORE JOB SUMMARY                                                                                               

The Histotechnologist 3 (H) performs as a laboratory professional who prepares tissues from surgical specimens for histology, electron microscopy, and immunohistochemistry. The incumbent utilizes laboratory and hospital systems to accession data and perform other appropriate system functions.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                                     

Prepares tissue specimens for microscopic examinations and handles the more complex jobs involving immunohistochemistry for clinical patient diagnosis. Maintains and reviews quality control in assigned laboratory facilities. Determines the acceptability of testing results and instrument function. Maintains all equipment and places orders for reagents and materials. Maintains records of samples including sample accessioning and paraffin block and slide files. Follows specimen handling and processing procedures. Participates in the formulation and revision of departmental policies and procedures.  Provides guidance and leadership to employees within assigned section. Makes recommendations for improvement of laboratory functions. Handles clinical and patient concerns in a confidential manner employing integrity and discretion. Identifies and resolves problems with equipment and specimen integrity. Examines slides under microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Education:

Associate’s degree in relevant field

Certification and Licensing:

Certification in relevant specialty or field

Experience:

Minimum 5 years of relevant experience

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions

A. Specimen Receiving

Verify that the patient name on the specimen container matches the accompanying documentation. Assign and record surgical numbers accurately. Place specimens in properly labeled cassettes according to established procedures.

B. Specimen Processing

Change processing solutions daily as outlined in the laboratory procedure manual. Monitor and document processing times and ensure correct tissue processing schedules are followed. Verify and record paraffin temperature settings to maintain optimal performance.

C. Embedding Procedure

Ensure proper orientation of specimens in paraffin blocks for diagnostic accuracy. Arrange blocks numerically and verify against logs to ensure all blocks are accounted for.

D. Sectioning Procedure

Confirm microtome settings to ensure tissue blocks are cut at the designated micron thickness. Inspect tissue sections for lines, tears, folds, or other artifacts and correct as necessary. Monitor and maintain proper water bath temperature and cleanliness. Follow established protocols for slide preparation and routing to designated areas.

E. Frozen Section Procedure

Verify that patient identifiers match documentation prior to processing. Assign surgical numbers and prepare cassettes properly. Orient and embed frozen specimens accurately to ensure representative sections. Examine frozen sections for quality, correcting artifacts such as folds or tears before release.

F. Quality Verification

Review all slides prior to pathologist review to ensure complete, fully faced sections with no missing parts or quality deficiencies.

G. Special Stain Procedures

Operate, program, and troubleshoot special stain instrumentation. Evaluate control slides for quality and accuracy. Perform manual special stains as required, ensuring consistency and proper documentation.

H. Compliance

Adhere strictly to all procedures outlined in the Anatomic Pathology Procedure Manual. Maintain documentation, safety, and quality control standards as required by CAP, CLIA, and institutional policies.
