At the forefront of medical discovery as it relates to understanding the causes of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and dementia, Pennington Biomedical Research Center is a campus of Louisiana State University and conducts basic, clinical and population research. The Center includes Basic Science, Clinical Research, and Population and Public Health, enabling both focused research and translational science. Research at Pennington Biomedical is supported broadly by multiple NIH Research Centers, and includes approximately 65 faculty and 20 postdoctoral fellows who comprise a network of 44 laboratories and 13 highly specialized core service facilities. Pennington Biomedical is located within state-of-the-art research facilities on a 222-acre campus in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Job Description:

Pennington Biomedical Research Center, a world-renowned academic research institute of Louisiana State University, is seeking a Medical Technologist Supervisor in Clinical Chemistry Laboratory.

 

The Medical Technologist Supervisor is responsible for coordinating, supervising, and ensuring quality laboratory operations within the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory. This role oversees testing accuracy, quality control, regulatory compliance, equipment maintenance, training, and staff competency assessments. The Medical Technologist Supervisor also serves as a technical resource, ensuring compliance with policies, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements while performing laboratory testing in a CLIA and CAP accredited laboratory.

Major Responsibilities

  • Performs, verifies, and reports moderate and high-complexity laboratory tests, ensuring timely, accurate, and reliable results in compliance with CLIA, CAP, and other regulatory standards.

  • Supervises daily laboratory operations, including workflow management, supply inventory, and staffing coordination, to ensure efficient and uninterrupted service.

  • Monitors quality control (QC) measures, troubleshoots discrepancies, and ensures all proficiency testing is performed and reported within required timeframes.

  • Conducts competency assessments for laboratory staff, providing ongoing training, mentorship, and performance evaluations in alignment with laboratory and hospital policies.

  • Ensures all laboratory equipment is properly maintained, following manufacturer guidelines, troubleshooting malfunctions, and escalating issues as necessary.

  • Supports accreditation readiness efforts, assisting with data collection, audits, and documentation for regulatory inspections, including CAP, CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA and PBRC regulations and standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or Chemical, Physical, Biological or Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field.

  • Licensed by LSBME.

  • 5 or more years of experience as a Medical Technologist, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role.

  • Proficiency in laboratory methodologies, instrument troubleshooting, and workflow optimization.

  • Strong understanding of quality control, proficiency testing, and regulatory compliance requirements (CAP, CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA).

  • Ability to train and mentor staff, conduct competency evaluations and ensure adherence to best practices.

  • Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills to identify and resolve laboratory issues promptly.

  • Strong organizational and communication skills, ensuring clear and accurate reporting of laboratory data.

  • Knowledge of laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic data capture.

Additional Job Description:

Work hours are primarily weekday with occasional weekends or after-hours commitments. Travel may be required in support of PBRC projects (Health Fairs and Community Outreach), field projects in collaboration with U.S. Department of Defense, and participation as a CAP inspector for peer-based laboratories.
