We are searching for the best talent for a Staff Design Engineer, Spine R&D. This role is based on the Raynham, MA campus.

Purpose: The Staff Design Engineer will support the Spine Surgeon Request Team in the design and development of specialty products to meet the needs of spine surgeons throughout the US. A key focus of the position will be taking the functional inputs and design requirements for specific surgeon requests and translating them into effective mechanical designs to meet their clinical needs. This includes generating CAD models and mechanical drawings to create the manufacturing specifications required to produce the finished products for clinical use.
 

You will be responsible for:

  • Lead and contribute to the design, development, and lifecycle management of innovative medical devices.
  • Develop CAD models and engineering drawings according to company standards, including GD&T and tolerance analysis.
  • Perform engineering analyses and simulations (including FEA) to validate and optimize designs.
  • Design and execute mechanical testing, experiments, and prototype evaluations; analyze and present results.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams to deliver technical solutions aligned with clinical, regulatory, quality, and business goals.
  • Support design control activities such as reviews, documentation, risk management (including FMEA), and verification/validation.
  • Coordinate prototypes, production builds, and product verification to ensure performance and safety.
  • Facilitate transfer of designs from concept to production.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, regulatory, marketing, and clinical teams for product development and launch.
  • Engage surgeons and customers to identify needs, gather feedback, and inform product solutions.
  • Provide leadership for design resources.
  • Identify and assess new technologies, materials, and trends for innovation and improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with quality, safety, regulatory, and company standards; communicate risks and opportunities to management.

Johnson & Johnson announced plans to separate our Orthopaedics business to establish a standalone orthopaedics company, operating as DePuy Synthes. The process of the planned separation is anticipated to be completed within 18 to 24 months, subject to legal requirements, including consultation with works councils and other employee representative bodies, as may be required, regulatory approvals and other customary conditions and approvals.

Should you accept this position, it is anticipated that, following conclusion of the transaction, you would be an employee of DePuy Synthes, and your employment would be governed by DePuy Synthes employment processes, programs, policies, and benefit plans. In that case, details of any planned changes would be provided to you by DePuy Synthes at an appropriate time and subject to any necessary consultation processes.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • BS/MS in Mechanical, Biomedical, or related engineering.
  • 10+ years orthopedic implants/instruments product development (spine preferred).
  • Siemens NX CAD/drawings; strong GD&T, tolerance analysis; engineering analysis/FEA (Ansys).
  • Regulated design controls (FDA QSR/ISO), risk management (Design FMEA), and manufacturing/NPI-to-transfer support; strong cross-functional leadership and communication.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • Medical imaging/segmentation experience (DICOM; Mimics and/or 3D Slicer).
  • Lean/Six Sigma and/or project management experience; ability to mentor/lead small technical teams.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is :

$109,000.00 - $174,800.00

Additional Description for Pay Transparency:

Subject to the terms of their respective plans, employees are eligible to participate in the Company’s consolidated retirement plan (pension) and savings plan (401(k)).

Subject to the terms of their respective policies and date of hire, employees are eligible for the following time off benefits:

Vacation –120 hours per calendar year

Sick time - 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Colorado –48 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington –56 hours per calendar year

Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays –13 days per calendar year

Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year

Parental Leave – 480 hours within one year of the birth/adoption/foster care of a child

Bereavement Leave – 240 hours for an immediate family member: 40 hours for an extended family member per calendar year

Caregiver Leave – 80 hours in a 52-week rolling period10 days

Volunteer Leave – 32 hours per calendar year
