WHAT'S THE JOB?

The Underground Utility Janitor is responsible for maintaining clean, sanitary, and serviceable underground support areas, including mine-dry, break rooms, washrooms, and related access or service spaces, while also performing basic light maintenance on janitorial fixtures, such as mechanical toilets. This position works in close coordination with the underground department and responds to underground-issued orders in accordance with site schedules, access rules, and client direction.

 

This role combines industrial janitorial duties with light facilities support in an active underground environment. The position requires strict adherence to the project's health, safety, environment, and quality requirements, including the shared responsibility to work safely, use required PPE, report hazards and incidents, complete required training, and follow WHMIS and SDS requirements for all cleaning products used on site.

 

This role is well-suited for professionals with janitorial, industrial cleaning, remote camp, mining, or facilities experience, especially when the work involves washrooms, locker/dry areas, break spaces, and high-traffic industrial environments. Industry examples for comparable roles include underground or mine-site janitors and change-house / dry attendants responsible for cleaning shower and change facilities, replenishing supplies, and maintaining clean, orderly service spaces.

The position requires fly-in/fly-out travel from Edmonton, Alberta or Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, to project sites in Nunavut or NWT, with potential for weather-related delays or logistical challenges.
 

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • 1–3 years of janitorial, industrial cleaning, housekeeping, utility, or camp experience preferred; mine-site or underground support experience is an asset.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel and reporting.
  • WHMIS and other relevant safety certifications (or willingness to obtain before deployment).
  • Physically fit to perform required duties.
  • Basic experience with work orders, service reporting, or communication logs is an asset.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge related to washroom fixtures, drains, dispensers, or mechanical toilets is preferred.
  • Must be able to pass a Drug & Alcohol Test and Health Assessment Test 
  • Must be able to clear a Criminmal Background Check 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform janitorial cleaning of assigned underground support areas, including mine-dry, break rooms, lunchrooms, washrooms, change areas, and other approved underground service spaces.
  • Clean, sanitize, and restock underground washrooms, handwashing points, and mechanical toilet areas to support hygiene and serviceability.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of passageways, service rooms, storage points, and immediate work areas, keeping floors as clean and as dry as practicable within the work environment.
  • Complete basic minor maintenance related to janitorial fixtures and underground sanitation equipment, including simple adjustments or upkeep of mechanical toilets, and promptly report defects, malfunctions, leaks, drainage issues, ventilation concerns, or repair needs beyond the role's authority.
  • Replenish soap, tissue, paper products, hand-cleaning supplies, and other approved consumables in underground washrooms, drys, and break areas.
  • Receive, prioritize, and complete underground-issued work orders and cleaning requests in coordination with the underground department and Dexterra supervision, ensuring tasks are completed safely and communicated clearly.
  • Use cleaning chemicals, dilution systems, tools, and equipment in accordance with WHMIS, SDS instructions, site procedures, and required PPE controls
  • Inspect assigned areas for housekeeping deficiencies, blocked access, unsafe conditions, or sanitation concerns, and immediately report hazards, incidents, and near misses in accordance with Dexterra's HSEQ responsibilities.
  • Follow all underground access requirements, training prerequisites, client instructions, and site-specific controls before entering, cleaning, or servicing underground work areas. Client-provided tickets and underground training must be completed prior to performing underground work.
  • Support shutdown cleaning, deep cleaning, emergency response clean-up, or temporary re-assignment of janitorial tasks as directed by the client and Dexterra supervision.

 

Physical Demands:

  • Lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 lbs. Stand, walk, bend, and climb stairs for extended periods.
  • Work in both indoor and outdoor environments under various weather conditions, accessing cabins, outbuildings, or utility entrances.
  • Perform repetitive tasks and safely handle cleaning equipment and materials. Must be comfortable working 12-hour shifts in a repetitive, fast-paced environment. Navigate fast-paced environments, especially during service peaks.
  • Drive from one location to another, delivering food and setting up the service station.
  • Operate cleaning machines (floor scrubbers, vacuums) safely.

 

Other Skills and Competencies:

  • Valid class 5 driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Strong understanding of industrial housekeeping, sanitation, and janitorial routines in high-traffic work areas.
  • Ability to work safely in compliance with PPE, WHMIS, SDS, and site-specific underground requirements.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for simple upkeep or troubleshooting of janitorial fixtures such as mechanical toilets.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to take direction from both Dexterra supervision and the underground department.
  • Good organizational skills, reliability, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to identify hazards, report issues promptly, and stop work / seek guidance when conditions are unsafe, consistent with Dexterra' s Internal Responsibility System.
  • Cultural sensitivity and ability to work respectfully with Indigenous and Inuit employees and client teams.

Working Conditions:

  • Employees are responsible for arranging their transportation to the designated point of dispatch (typically Edmonton, Alberta).
  • Fly-in/fly-out position based in a remote Arctic camp, with potential for weather-related travel delays.
  • Shared accommodations and meals are provided while on site.
  • Extended periods away from home; rotational schedule required.
  • Fast-paced food service environment requiring physical stamina and long hours.
  • Must comply with all health, safety, and sanitation standards established by the clients and the Dexterra Group.

Work schedule and remuneration: 

Underground Utility Janitor work on a rotational schedule of 3 weeks on/ 3 weeks off.  Site locations are in remote settings, requiring air travel to site from Edmonton, AB. You may be required to work nights, weekdays, weekends, and general holidays. Wages are paid on an hourly basis with a starting rate of $20.00
