Job description
The Director of Communications is responsible for the development and execution of the communications strategy of the church as well as overseeing key communications disciplines including: Copywriting, Email, Digital, Testimonial Stories, Social Media, Printing, and Comm Project Management, reporting to the Communications Pastor. A full time position, the schedule is generally Monday-Friday for a total of 40] hours. Although the position is regularly Monday-Friday, ministry happens in the evenings and during the weekends. All Mariners staff are expected to work during Christmas Eve and Easter services, as well as participate in Rooted once/year. This position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Key Responsibilities
- Communications planning to drive church engagement with key ministries and church initiatives to help move a growing number of people through our discipleship process while aligning with the annual roadmap calendar for the church.
- Manage the church functions of social media, copywriting, email, and project management.
- Develop a relationship with key leaders and act as an advocate for creative and clear communications.
- Connect with ministries on a personal face-to-face and regular basis to understand their ministries’ needs and wants.
- Maintain keen awareness of cultural trends affecting churches and make appropriate recommendations on communication tools, channels, and strategies.
- Provide oversight and direction for email, web, social, and print strategy and communication.
- Direct social media team to engage audiences across traditional and new media.
- Collaborate with ministries to efficiently develop creative options for different channels.
- Management of our core digital assets, marinerschurch.org and the Mariners Church app, ensuring they are operate on a strategic plan and are healthy and growing.
- Resourcing staff and volunteers with communication collateral.
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, or equivalent experience
- 7–10 years of experience in communications, marketing, or public relations, with a proven track record of developing and executing strategic communication plans.
- Proficiency in Google Workspace or similar tools; experience with content management systems (CMS), email marketing platforms, and social media management tools; familiarity with design tools (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite or Canva) and analytics platforms.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and clearly communicate expectations and coordinate across teams and volunteers
