Job description
We are looking for a passionate and experienced Sr Data Platform Software Engineering Manager to lead Veza's Graph team - the core of everything Veza does. The Access Graph is Veza's foundational data platform: a patented, AI-native engine that maps and analyzes access relationships across every human, non-human, and agentic identity in an enterprise. This is a high-impact leadership role at the heart of the engineering organization.
You will combine engineering management with deep technical partnership - leading a team of skilled engineers and tech leads, setting the technical vision for graph infrastructure, and driving the performance, scalability, and reliability of Veza's core data platform. You will partner closely with product, integrations, and security engineering teams to evolve the graph's capabilities as Veza scales within the ServiceNow ecosystem.
Technical Leadership
- Own the technical vision and roadmap for Veza's Access Graph platform - the core data layer that powers identity visibility, risk detection, and access governance across the enterprise.
- Drive architecture, design patterns, and engineering best practices for graph data modeling, query performance, and scalability at enterprise scale.
- Partner with the Graph Tech Lead and senior engineers on high-impact technical decisions, conducting design and code reviews to ensure quality and adherence to engineering standards.
- Identify and champion new technologies, tools, and approaches, including AI/ML, to continuously advance the Graph platform's capabilities.
- Ensure the Graph platform is built and maintained with high performance, reliability, and observability, including logging, monitoring, and compliance requirements.
- Define and drive detailed engineering execution plans, timelines, and processes that keep the team shipping with quality and predictability.
Cross-functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Product, Integrations, and Security Engineering teams to translate business objectives and customer needs into graph platform capabilities.
- Partner with third-party identity providers, directory services, and cloud platforms - including Active Directory, LDAP, AWS IAM, and major cloud providers - to ensure the Graph platform stays current with the evolving identity landscape.
People Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and grow a team of backend software engineers and tech leads, building individual development plans and creating stretch opportunities.
- Own the full talent lifecycle for the Graph team - hiring, onboarding, retention, and performance.
Experience
- 10+ years of experience in backend software engineering with a strong focus on data platforms, distributed systems, or graph infrastructure, and 4+ years in an engineering leadership role - ideally spanning both startup and enterprise SaaS environments.
- Experience integrating AI/ML models into data platform workflows, or leveraging AI to enhance data quality, inference, or system intelligence at scale - strongly preferred.
- Proven track record building and scaling high-performance, distributed data platforms — graph databases, query engines, or large-scale data modeling experience strongly preferred.
- Deep familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP), distributed systems, and containerization technologies such as Kubernetes.
- Strong understanding of database technologies (SQL and NoSQL), caching mechanisms, and the tradeoffs involved in building systems that process billions of data relationships at enterprise scale.
- Experience with authentication, authorization protocols, and IAM concepts — understanding how identity and access relationships are structured across complex enterprise environments.
- Hands-on engineering background with proficiency in one or more of Go, Java, or Python — comfortable diving into the codebase and engaging at a technical depth appropriate for a player-coach role.
Leadership
- Demonstrated ability to lead and grow a fully distributed, high-performing engineering team - hiring, onboarding, mentoring, and retaining strong engineers and tech leads.
- Strong organizational and project management skills - able to run multiple workstreams, maintain engineering cadence, and keep delivery on track without micromanaging.
- Clear, proactive communicator who can translate complex technical concepts for both engineering teams and senior leadership.
Who You Are
- Relentlessly high standards - never satisfied with the status quo, always looking for a better way.
- Able to dive deep without losing sight of the big picture - never out of touch with the technical details, never lost in them either.
- Low ego, high intellectual curiosity - you hire people smarter than you and create the conditions for them to do their best work.
