ABOUT STRAVA

Strava is the app for active people. With over 180 million athletes in more than 185 countries, it’s more than tracking workouts—it’s where people make progress together, from new habits to new personal bests. No matter your sport or how you track it, Strava’s got you covered. Find your crew, crush your goals, and make every effort count. Start your journey https://www.strava.com/subscription with Strava today.

Our mission is simple: to motivate people to live their best active lives. We believe in the power of movement to connect and drive people forward.

As our Senior Product Counsel, you will play a critical role in shaping the future of Strava's products and features. You’ll serve as a trusted legal partner and subject-matter expert to our cross-functional teams, helping to build the legal foundation needed to navigate the rapidly evolving landscape around technology, privacy, and AI. You’ll develop creative, scalable solutions that manage risk and move the business forward with confidence. You’ll embrace AI as a core part of how you work; bringing curiosity, sound judgment, and an experimental mindset to using AI tools to drive efficiency, accelerate problem-solving, and operate with greater speed and impact.

This role is ideal for a self-motivated, commercially-minded, AI-forward attorney who thrives at the intersection of law and product innovation. It’s perfect for someone who brings deep expertise in privacy and emerging global SaaS-related regulations, a pragmatic approach to complex problems, and a genuine passion for partnering with technical teams to build products that are as legally sound as they are delightful. This role will report to the Deputy General Counsel.

We follow a flexible hybrid model that translates to more than half of your time on-site in our San Francisco office — three days per week.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Serve as the go-to legal advisor and partner for several Product, Design, Marketing, and Engineering teams focused on building Strava’s next generation of products and features throughout the product life cycle, from ideation to launch and beyond.
  • Advise on high‑risk or novel activities (e.g. new AI use cases, features implicating health data, or sensitive user information), helping structure appropriate safeguards, governance, and documentation.
  • Develop strategies for handling legal issues in creative ways and build processes for scaling flexible solutions that address risk.
  • Monitor evolving legal and regulatory developments and provide clear and cogent guidance to internal stakeholders.
  • Develop and deliver training to up-level skills and knowledge across the organization on relevant legal and regulatory topics.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE TEAM

  • Subject-matter expertise regarding product development in a global consumer tech context.
  • Strong cross-functional communication and stakeholder-management skills. You create and maintain relationships across the organization, and are comfortable communicating in a way that’s tailored to different audiences.
  • An AI-forward mindset, with experience using AI as a tool to accelerate analysis, simplify complex problems, and uncover more effective ways to support fast-moving product development.
  • Process-driven and results-oriented with proven ability to identify, prioritize and resolve issues quickly and independently.
  • Strategic thinking, with a track record of delivering creative and pragmatic solutions to novel issues.
  • Exceptional judgment and impeccable integrity with excellent communication skills.
  • A team player who leads with humility and a healthy sense of humor.
  • A collaborative, no-task-is-beneath-me approach to your work.

REQUIREMENTS

  • JD with 8+ years relevant work experience in a demanding and innovative legal environment; at least 2 years in-house at a consumer tech company preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of US federal and state privacy and data‑security laws, plus working knowledge of GDPR and/or other global privacy frameworks.
  • Demonstrated experience partnering with technical teams (Product, Engineering, Information Security) to translate legal and regulatory requirements into innovative, delightful, and compliant products and features.
  • Demonstrated experience advising on emerging US and global AI legal requirements and AI‑governance best practices, and experience advising on AI/ML tools, vendors, or products from a privacy and data‑protection perspective.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal concepts to non‑lawyers and senior executives, and to drive clear decisions in ambiguous, time‑sensitive situations.
  • Has a demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal guidance, proactively manages tasks and priorities across multiple projects, analyzes and executes work efficiently, collaborates effectively with cross-functional teams, and thrives in fast-paced, results-driven environments.
  • Confidence using modern tools and systems (e.g., Generative AI, CLM tools, Asana, Slack, Notion) to amplify impact.

PREFERRED ADDITIONAL ATTRIBUTES

  • Relevant privacy and/or AI certifications (e.g., CIPP/US, CIPP/E, CIPM, AIGP) or demonstrably equivalent experience in global privacy program design and execution.
  • Prior in‑house experience at a rapidly scaling tech company and working with globally distributed teams across time zones.
  • Prior experience at a top law firm.
