Join Steel America as a General Foreman!
Overview: Steel America, part of Colonna's Shipyard, is searching for a skilled General Foreman specializing in Combination Welding and Shipfitting for our 2nd shift operations in Norfolk, VA. We offer dislocation support on a case-by-case basis, up to $5,000.
Position Summary: This role requires a comprehensive understanding of project specifications, ensuring safe and efficient production in ship repair and industrial fabrication. As a General Foreman, you will oversee our talented trades workforce while meeting our quality, budget, and safety goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and manage labor requirements for successful job completion.
- Communicate effectively with your team by interpreting blueprints, specifications, and job orders.
- Ensure adequate personnel and resources are available to meet production schedules.
- Analyze and address work problems to minimize production disruptions.
- Assist in supervising and evaluating trades personnel, recommending necessary training for skill advancement.
- Oversee hiring, retention, and disciplinary actions for shop personnel.
- Identify candidates for workforce development and mentorship opportunities.
- Collaborate daily with Foremen to develop efficient production action plans.
- Approve all project deliverables and manage material orders to meet contractual obligations.
- Ensure compliance with all technical job specifications, managing test plans and documentation as needed.
- Provide feedback on budgets and schedule progress to project management.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or completion of Registered Apprentice program plus 2 years of trades experience, or a high school diploma with 6 years of trades experience along with 2 years of supervisory experience.
- Proven skills in multi-pass, all position welding using SMAW, GMAW, and FCAW.
- Familiarity with AWS D1.1 and NAVSEA codes and requirements.
- Experience in welding automation and industrial fabrication.
- Strong communication skills to effectively interact with team members and management.
- Reliable attendance and commitment to safety practices.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in supporting multiple trades.
- Performing visual inspections of welds and fit-ups.
- Ability in GTAW and SAW processes.
- CWI certification is a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry heavy weights (typically over 20 lbs).
- Perform tasks in challenging environments, including confined spaces and at heights.
- Frequent exposure to operational noise and industrial conditions.
- Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators and face shields.
