Job description

The Data Governance Consultant will leverage Microsoft Purview’s Unified Catalog, Data Map, and Data Quality capabilities to ensure enterprise data assets are high-quality, compliant, and easily discoverable across multi-cloud and on‑premises environments. This role combines deep technical expertise in Purview with strong data analysis skills to assess, monitor, and continuously improve data ecosystems—enabling informed business decisions while mitigating privacy, security, and compliance risks.

Key Responsibilities

Implement Data Governance Frameworks

  • Design and deploy Microsoft Purview-based governance solutions, including automated scanning, classification, and lineage tracking.
  • Catalog and govern structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data assets across diverse data platforms.

Manage Data Quality Initiatives

  • Define, configure, and maintain data quality rules within Purview’s Unified Catalog using no-code/low-code capabilities.
  • Execute recurring data quality scans to generate quality scores and identify issues such as inconsistencies, inaccuracies, and missing data.

Monitor and Analyse Data Health

  • Utilise Purview dashboards and insights to assess data quality metrics, conduct root cause analysis, and track performance trends.
  • Collaborate with data owners and stewards to remediate issues and improve overall data reliability and trustworthiness.

Support Compliance and Risk Management

  • Implement sensitivity labels, access controls, and governance policies within Purview.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations such as GDPR, CCPA, and internal data governance standards.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with data analysts, data engineers, and business stakeholders to embed Purview into data workflows.
  • Provide enablement, training, and guidance to support self-service data discovery and governance adoption.

Reporting and Optimisation

  • Develop and deliver reports on governance maturity, data quality metrics, and compliance outcomes.
  • Continuously optimise Purview configurations to improve scalability, performance, and efficiency across large and complex data estates.

EXPERIENCE LEVEL: 

Intermediate to Senior (7+ years overall experience with hands-on, recent experience in data governance and/or Purview specifically.)

QUALIFICATIONS:

Degree in Data Analytics / Data Science / Computer Science/ Information Systems OR Equivalent practical experience with strong data analysis background

CERTIFICATIONS: (1 or more of these, not a deal breaker, but nice to have)

- Microsoft Certified: Data Analyst Associate (PL‑300)

- Microsoft Certified: Fabric Analytics Engineer Associate (DP‑600)

- Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate (DP‑203)

- DAMA-DMBOK / CDMP (Certified Data Management Professional)
- Collibra / Informatica Governance certs

TECHNICAL SKILLS:

Microsoft Purview (Core)

  • Unified Catalog
    • Asset registration and discovery
    • Business glossary and metadata management
  • Automated scanning & classification
    • Structured, semi-structured, and unstructured sources
  • Lineage
    • End-to-end lineage across data platforms
  • Data Quality (Purview Data Quality)
    • Defining rules (no/low-code)
    • Running scans and interpreting scores

Data Platforms & Ecosystems

  • Strong understanding of:
    • Azure data services (at minimum):

  • Practical experience with:
    • Data ownership and stewardship models
    • Data quality dimensions (accuracy, completeness, timeliness, consistency)
    • Data lifecycle management
    • Metadata management concepts
