Job description

AECOM is actively seeking an energetic and enthusiastic biologist for immediate employment in Tampa, Florida to learn and work with a team of talented environmental professionals and apply their academic knowledge in the environmental field. The appropriately qualified applicant will be able to demonstrate knowledge of biological and ecological systems specific to Florida and the southeastern United States. AECOM is proud to provide our employees with exciting, challenging projects. The incumbent can look forward to supporting projects, such as wetland delineations and assessments, threatened and endangered species surveys and assessments, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation, and preparation of environmental permit applications and related documents. Position is assigned to the Tampa office and remote/hybrid work will be considered.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Perform assignments that require background in wildlife ecology and/or botany and ecological processes.
  • Conduct field and office activities
  • Use strong writing skills to prepare high-quality NEPA-related documents and other technical reports
  • Conduct biological surveys/ protocol-level fieldwork as part of a team. Identify and record fauna and/or flora in field (terrestrial and coastal).
  • Utilize electronic data collection methods and manage data, as needed.
  • Support writing assignments including natural community evaluation reports, environmental permitting documents, botanical survey reports, wildlife assessment reports, environmental assessments, environmental impact reports and statements, biological assessments, mitigation plans, and/or monitoring reports, and/or sections thereof.
  • Possess some knowledge of major state (e.g., FDEP) and federal agencies (e.g., USACE, USFWS, NOAA Fisheries) and major regulatory frameworks (e.g., NEPA, ESA, CWA and CCA) as they relate to biological resource impacts
  • Work under supervision of a project manager or senior-level team member
  • Ensure assigned tasks stay on schedule and budget.
  • Bring flexibility to serve as a cross-disciplinary resource to best meet the needs of AECOM and its clients
  • Occasional travel may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in biology, ecology, botany, or other closely related discipline + 4 years of experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education,
  • Valid Driver’s License and as a condition of employment must be able to pass AECOM’s Motor Vehicle Records review.
  • Wetlands experience.
  • Due to the nature of work, US citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with flora and fauna in Florida is preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Candidate must be flexible and willing to support multiple projects as needed.
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team; be innovative and a problem solver.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Ability to create and maintain tracking spreadsheets and documents
  • Prior consulting experience preferred, but non-consultant candidates with relevant experience will be considered.
  • The ability and desire to interact with clients and agency representatives
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced work environment where changing client priorities result in the need to determine creative ways to get the job done.
  • Experience with protocol wildlife surveys, special-status plant surveys, and/or habitat assessments
  • Experience in environmental permitting
  • Proficiency in ecosystem assessments, environmental permitting and NEPA studies (Federal, State DOT, etc.)
  • Proficiency with processing and interpreting data for evaluating biological impacts and site restoration strategies
  • Desire to assist AECOM in the continued growth of the Florida ecological practice
