Position Summary

This position provides environmental compliance support to generating facilities and other company operations to ensure they are compliant with federal, state, and local laws and regulations and aligned with corporate environmental policies and procedures. General knowledge is required in the areas of air, water, waste, and/or hazardous materials. Collaborates with environmental and business operations partners in permit applications and renewals. Maintains current knowledge on environmental laws and regulations and a working knowledge of technical aspects of regulatory requirements. Works with and under the guidance of experienced team members, using established procedures, to support environmental technical growth.
Responsibilities
- Serves as subject matter expert for the site environmental program and compliance issues and supports company’s environmental goals, strategies, programs, and processes. Supports the implementation of procedures and programs to assist facilities in complying with environmental laws and regulations. Assists with tracking regulatory changes, legislative activities, and industry standards. Under direction, works with internal Subject Matter Experts and federal, state, and local regulatory authorities to interpret regulations and laws. May support Duke Energy participation on various internal/external industry committees and teams.
- Provide basic regulatory-required and internal environmental reports. This includes the review of complex data to ensure accuracy and compliance with monitoring standards and permit limits. Assists with assigned environmental training programs.
- Participates in preparation, submittal and negotiation of permits and permit renewals with federal, state, and local authorities. Assists with communication of permit requirements to facilities. Works with other EHS professionals and facility personnel to update various facility plans and documents that require knowledge and experience while minimizing impacts to operational activities.
- Works with others to support accomplishment of work unit goals and enhance company reputation through effective planning, organizing, communicating, and scheduling of environmental work activities. Works with others to support the department’s routine and special projects to accomplish business objectives.
- Strives to continually develop and improve job-related, technical knowledge and skill to ensure that department expectations are met.
Basic/Required Qualifications
Note: This posting is for one open position. Dependent on relevant experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below. Entry level candidates will be considered for this position.
Associate EHS Consultant
Bachelors degree in Health & Safety, Science, Engineering or other related degree
In lieu of Bachelors degree, High School/GED and 4 years related work experience
EHS Consultant
Bachelors degree in Health & Safety, Science, Engineering or other related degree
Minimum 3 years related work experience
In lieu of Bachelors degree and 3 years' experience, High School/GED and 7 years related work experience
Desired Qualifications
- Understanding in Title V Air Regulations.
- Understanding of Primary and Secondary Drinking Water Standards.
- Experience in Resources Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Regulations.
- Experience working with federal, state, or regulatory agencies.
- Experience in supporting environmental compliance at multiple facilities and/or within multiple regulatory jurisdictions.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and successfully complete each of them within specified timeframes.
- Experience working with diverse groups toward the successful execution of a common goal or objective.
- Working toward certification(s) as an environmental professional (QEP, CHMM, PMP, etc.) or Registration (P.E.)
- Excellent communication (both oral and written) and interpersonal skills with a customer-oriented focus.
- Enjoy working indoors and outdoors.
- Bachelor’s degree in Natural Science, Environmental Science, Engineering or other related degree.
Working Conditions
Onsite Mobility Classification – Work will be performed at a company facility
Office environment with exposure to PC terminal and keyboard
Outside work during all seasons.
Occasional overtime, weekend, outage and callout work.
Field, work site, facility visitation required.
