Job description

Summary

As a Lead Welding Expert in the Department of Navy, you will play a pivotal role at various naval shipyards, including the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, and Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility. Your expertise will be utilized in the Structural Shop (Shop 26).

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will

  • Conduct thorough reviews of documents related to completed tasks and trade processes.
  • Keep shop personnel informed of cutting-edge technologies, procedures, and tooling advances relevant to welding operations.
  • Implement process enhancements in collaboration with engineering to drive down costs and boost the efficacy of the welding and non-destructive testing programs.
  • Inspect both completed and ongoing projects for quality workmanship and compliance with standards, specifications, and schedules.
  • Provide mentorship and training to less experienced employees, showcasing proper techniques and discussing practical alternatives.
  • Lead your team as an Expert Welder to ensure all work assignments meet the high standards required.

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Must be deemed suitable for federal employment.
  • Active participation in the direct deposit pay program is mandatory.
  • New Department of the Navy employees must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • If a retired military member, your appointment within 180 days of your retirement is subject to certain provisions.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • A pre-appointment physical examination is required.
  • Capability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds is necessary.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test is mandatory.
  • Obtaining and maintaining a security clearance is required.
  • Personal protective equipment must be worn throughout the work shift.
  • Work may involve exposure to potentially harmful agents; participation in medical surveillance is required.
  • Travel within CONUS and OCONUS, possibly to remote sites, may be required.
  • Ability to climb vertical ladders is necessary.
  • Preparedness for unusual work hours, including nights, weekends, and rotating shifts.
  • Possession of two common welding qualifications in techniques such as SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, among others, is required.
  • Must maintain visual inspection qualifications per VT-271.

Qualifications

Applicants must demonstrate through experience and training the requisite knowledge and skill level necessary for this position. Your abilities will be evaluated based on your expertise in leading and supervising welding operations.

Additional Information

Salary is competitive and influenced by geographical location, pending annual local wage surveys. This position may also provide relocation incentives. Temporary promotions are available and may be extended up to five years.
