Job description

On June 16, 2022, Governor Kathy Hochul signed the NYC Public Housing Preservation Trust Act, which authorized the creation of the NYC Public Housing Preservation Trust (the Trust). The Trust is a public benefit corporation that will oversee the renovation and rehabilitation of the City’s public housing developments, owned by the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA). NYCHA will remain the permanent owner of the land/buildings and will enter a long-term ground lease with the Trust to secure Section 8 vouchers.

The selected Supervising Housing Groundskeeper will be a NYCHA employee assigned to Nostrand Houses and will work on behalf of the NYC Public Housing Preservation Trust.

Specific duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Plan and supervise work of housing caretakers and other employees engaged in gardening, tree care, and grounds maintenance; ensure work is carried out in an efficient and effective manner and that all safety rules/regulations are followed
  • Supervise the care, cleaning and maintenance of landscaped areas, walks, driveways, parking areas, playgrounds and fixtures thereon
  • Train others in gardening techniques, grounds maintenance, and in making minor repairs on grounds and fixtures
  • Ensure the proper maintenance of all assigned materials, tool and equipment. Prepare requisitions for material and supplies
  • Check repair work being performed by contractors on grounds and landscaped areas and reports on completion of work
  • Assist tenants in community development projects such as flower and vegetable gardens
  • Maintain motorized equipment to ensure safety.

Note: Preferred candidates are those already serving and experienced in title.

SUPERVISING HOUSING GROUNDSKEE - 81350

  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, and three years of satisfactory full-time gardening experience, at least one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.

License/Certificate Requirement

  • Must possess a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York; and
  • Within the first six months of the probationary period, probationers will be required to pass the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation examination for a Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certificate (Category 3A) in ornamental shade tree and turf. The license and certificate described in "1" and "2" above must be maintained for the duration of employment.
