Your next career opportunity
In this pivotal curatorial role, you will steward the University’s internationally significant Rare Music Collection.


You will shape object-based learning, research and exhibitions, collaborating with scholars, students and fellow curators.


You will gain scope to grow your expertise, with future potential for a continuing appointment.

What you will deliver:

  • Oversee safe housing, handling, movement and loans of Rare Music Collection materials to cultural heritage standards.
  • Design and deliver exhibitions, displays, talks and digital content that broadens access for students, staff and communities.
  • Lead and support research on collection materials, producing or facilitating high-quality interpretive resources and nurturing key stakeholder relationships.
  • Embed rare music materials in teaching by co-creating object-based learning, curriculum activities and e-learning modules.
  • Strengthen cataloguing, digitisation and rights management, enriching discovery systems in partnership with metadata and legal specialists.

You may be a great fit if you:

  • Hold postgraduate qualifications in museum or curatorial studies, or equivalent relevant education and experience with cultural collections.
  • Bring tertiary training or substantial experience in musicology, music history or theory, ideally within a research environment.
  • Demonstrate proven curatorial practice, including exhibitions, access programmes and interpretive content for diverse academic and public audiences.
  • Apply advanced skills in handling, documenting and assessing significance of rare or fragile cultural materials and collections.
  • Use collection management systems, employing cataloguing standards, digitisation workflows and discovery tools to enhance access and data quality.
  • Collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams, managing stakeholder, donor and academic relationships with professionalism and integrity.

Your new team – Archives & Special Collections
Archives and Special Collections (ASC) develops, provides care for, and facilitates access to the University of Melbourne Archives, Rare Books, Prints and Drawings, Rare Music, Rare Maps and Rare East Asian collections. The department is led by the Associate Director, Archives and Special Collections and University Archivist. The department sits within Research and Collection Stewardship, a sub-portfolio of Scholarly Services led by the Director and University Librarian.
