Job description
Work for the IMF. Work for the World.
The International Monetary Fund’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (OAP) in Tokyo is looking for a junior economist to conduct analytical work on the Asia-Pacific region in collaboration with OAP economists, researchers in the region, and economists at IMF’s headquarters. This fixed-term position would be ideal for an early career economist interested in policy work, the work of the IMF, and pursuing a potential career in an international organization.
Job Responsibilities
The main tasks will be (i) working on regional research projects or analytical pieces, as part of the IMF’s surveillance of the region, and (ii) keeping abreast with the most recent macroeconomic and financial developments in the region. In addition to research and analytical work, potential candidates should be willing to allocate some amount of their time to OAP’s other operational work.
Qualifications
Required qualifications include the following: high-caliber graduate training in economics or finance, ideally at the PhD level, with recent graduates or graduating students from Ph.D. programs very welcome to apply; advanced knowledge of econometrics, related software packages and standard economic databases; proficiency in English, with effective verbal and written communication skills; accuracy and attention to details; ability to work in a team as well as independently and to multi-task under pressure. Versatility and openness to learn new skills are a must. A good command of Japanese is desirable but not required.
Salary and Benefits
The salary and benefits would be commensurate with background and experience and will be set with reference to the Japanese domestic market. A successful candidate from outside of Japan, and who is not a Japanese citizen, will be expected to obtain by themselves their necessary work visa for Japan and to relocate to Japan at their own expense. OAP will provide supporting documentation needed for the application for a work visa, including the offer of employment letter.

Contract Period
The position’s start date would ideally be either September 2026 or April 2027. Other start dates could be considered. After successful completion of an initial period of one year, a fixed-term contract of two years may be offered.
