Temporary Building Energy Analyst (part-time, 28 hours/week)

The Building Energy Analyst helps improve campus building energy performance through detailed analysis of electrical and thermal (BTU) meter data, SkySpark analytics, and Building Automation System (BAS) data. This role compares real-world building performance against Investment Grade Audit (IGA) findings and national energy benchmarks to identify actionable energy-efficiency opportunities.

Working closely with BYU’s Air Conditioning Shop, the Analyst helps identify HVAC systems and operational strategies that can be optimized to reduce energy costs, improve system reliability, and ensure buildings provide consistent and effective space conditioning.

In addition, this position will support our metering and analytics program by assisting the student lead responsible for the BAS analytics database. Responsibilities include database-driven data collection, validation, analysis, and reporting to support ongoing energy management and performance improvement initiatives.

What you’ll do in this position:

  • Data Analysis & Benchmarking 

  • Monitor Utility Meter Functionality

  • Building HVAC Systems Optimization 

  • Advanced Building Energy Audits and Assessments

  • Financial Analysis

  • Communicate findings to engineers, architects, and owners

  • Prepare technical reports and presentations

What qualifies you for this role:

Required

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU

  • 2-years of college or university studying computer science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, analytical engineering, or equivalent.

  • Basic experience working with building energy analysis

  • Data analytics (Excel, Python) 

Preferred

  • 4-year degree in computer science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, analytical engineering, or equivalent.

  • Building science & thermodynamics

  • HVAC systems knowledge

  • Energy modeling software

Pay Grade: 50

 

Typical Starting Pay: $25.00-$32.50 an hour
