Overview
The DPD Detention Officer I performs jail guard duties by processing and monitoring juvenile prisoners in custody at the Dallas Juvenile Processing Office and occasionally assisting Dallas Police Officers with prisoners' forms.
Essential Functions
1. Processes incoming and outgoing juvenile prisoners, searches for weapons and contraband, escorts them to and from assigned cells, and maintains an inventory of prisoners’ personal property in accordance with established procedures.
2. Conducts visual and video-assisted cell searches; conducts prisoner headcounts and ensures all prisoners are accounted for and the facility is secure.
3. Effectively operates fire extinguishers, office equipment, and software.
4. Monitors and observes prisoners’ activities to ensure no disturbances occur; subdues and restrains aggressive or violent prisoners using approved methods to ensure the safety of staff and prisoners.
5. Takes appropriate actions to aid officers, staff, and prisoners exposed to danger or in a situation where danger might be imminent.
6. Takes necessary actions to de-escalate situations as necessary and appropriate.
7. Assists and ensures that incoming prisoners are afforded necessary medical and mental health treatment.
8. Maintains cleanliness in cells.
9. Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of state laws regarding juvenile prisoners and the custody procedures for juvenile prisoners.
Advanced skills in de-escalation techniques and ability to handle irate prisoners.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Ability to follow established procedures.
Ability to remain calm and in control in critical situations.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to maintain physical fitness in order to restrain prisoners.
Ability to work varied shifts, weekends, and holidays.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
High school diploma or GED.
EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of general work experience in public school districts, family assistance centers or other similar fields.
EQUIVALENCY
An associate degree (or higher) in criminal justice, business, public administration, or social science field will meet the education and experience requirements.
LICENSES and CERTIFICATIONS
Valid Texas driver’s license with good driving record or a TX Identification Card.
Attend and successfully complete an internal DPD Detention Officer course sponsored by the Dallas Police Academy.
Attend and complete annual refresher DPD Detention Officer training.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Must be 18 years of age.
Must pass an intensive background investigation and drug test.
No Felony or Class A Misdemeanor convictions.
No Class B Misdemeanor convictions within the last ten (10) years.
No family violence convictions.
Cannot currently be on deferred adjudication for any Felony, Class A, or Class B Misdemeanor.
No outstanding citations or warrants.
Salary Range
