Job description

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.

The Personnel Division seeks a motivated and detail-oriented Records Management Intern to assist in the effective management of departmental records. This position provides a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in records management while supporting various administrative tasks that are essential for the smooth operation of the agency.

  • Assist with supporting the records management unit and procedures across all agency departments and correctional facilities.
  • Process a variety of legal documents and maintain agency records in compliance with established protocols.
  • Collaborate in the implementation of a forthcoming enterprise content management system for agency records.
  • Provide customer service support to agency business units related to file and document inventories and assist in creating and implementing records retention schedules.
  • Reference and release files in response to departmental requests, adhering to established procedures.
  • Help in rolling out procedures for implementing records management programs, including document imaging and physical records storage.
  • Assist in maintaining records management methods and practices, ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
  • Under supervision, perform clerical and technical tasks related to organizing, coordinating, and monitoring the filing of records.
  • Take on additional duties as assigned to support the Records Management Unit’s objectives.

As of June of the Program year the prospective intern must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year). NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.
