Navajo Preference Employment Act In accordance with Navajo Nation and federal law, TCRHCC has implemented an Affirmative Action Plan pursuant to the Navajo Preference in Employment Act. Overview This position is a grant funded position by the Diabetes Grant . A s such , this position is contingent upon the renewal of the Diabetes Grant at Echo Cliffs Health Center . The incumbent’s primary responsibility is to provide clinical periodontal therapy and oral hygiene instruction to the dental patients that have Type I or Type II Diabetes or are pre-diabetic under the general supervision of staff dentists and dental specialists in a dental public health framework . He or she will act as a liaison between the Dental Program and the Diabetes Program sitting on the Diabetes committee when asked , performing dental screenings, generating quarterly activity reports, and organizing dental exam days for Diabetic patients registered at Echo Cliffs Health Center . This position involves giving presentations and/or demonstrations to community members as well as to staff . The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions listed below proficiently and willingly. Qualifications Education: Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene Certification: Must have current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification by the American Heart Association for at least 90 days after start of employment and must be maintained during employment . Must be currently licensed to practice as a dental hygienist in a State or Territory of the United States or District of Columbia Must be certified to administer local anesthesia for dental treatment Must be certified as a radiographer in Dental Hygiene field Other Skills and Abilities: A record of satisfactory performance in all prior and current employment as evidenced by positive employment references from previous and current employers. If a new graduate, there must be positive references from teachers and supervisors from the dental hygiene program attended. All employment references must address and indicate success in each one of the following areas: Positive working relationships with others Possession of high ethical standards and no history of complaints Reliable and dependable; reports to work as scheduled without excessive absences or tardiness The incumbent must also be p roficient in the use of ultrasonic cleaning instruments ( ie . piezon , cavitron ) and be willing to use them as a primary means of calculus removal Basic Computer Skills Completion of and, above-satisfactory scores on all job interviews, demonstrating to the satisfaction of the interviewees and TCRHCC that the applicant can perform the essential functions of the job Successful completion of and positive results from all background and reference checks, including positive employment references from authorized representatives of past and current employers demonstrating to the satisfaction of TCRHCC a record of satisfactory performance and that the applicant can perform the essential functions of the job Successful completion of fingerprint clearance requirements, physical examinations, and other screenings indicating that the applicant is qualified to be employed by TCRHCC and demonstrating to the satisfaction of TCRHCC that the applicant can perform the essential functions of the job Submission of all required employment-related documents, applications, resumes, references, and other required information free of false, misleading, or incomplete information, as determined by TCRHCC. MENTAL AND PHYSICAL EFFORT The physical and mental demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job . Incumbent uses lead shields to protect against radiation and wears face masks and gloves during treatment procedures. Position requires prolonged sitting, talking, or hearing; pushing/pulling; and, use of hands to finger, handle, or feel. It also requires extensive periods of standing; and reaching with hands and arms. Occasionally incumbent will need to be able to walk; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Frequently requires that weight be lifted, or force be exerted up to 10 pounds and infrequently up to 25 pounds. This position requires the ability to hear alarms on equipment, client calls, instructions from physicians/department staff; and, overhead pages from loudspeaker . Work requires the incumbent to have close, color, peripheral vision; and, depth perception with the ability to adjust focus. The incumbent must be able to perform prolong periods of repetitive motion actions using both hands; grasping simple/light; fine dexterity; and, occasionally in grasping firm/heavy. They must also be able to frequently use repetitive motion actions of foot control. Mental: Considerable ingenuity, original thinking and independent judgment are exercised and required of the incumbent . W orking with a group of people initially unfamiliar with health standards, the necessity for preventive care and other essential health needs. The incumbent must be able to cope with problems and make judgments and evaluations of the situation and type of care needed and refer those of a more complicated nature to a specialist. Responsibilities ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : Willing and able to use ultrasonic cleaning devices ( ie . piezon , cavitron ) proficiently and as primary means of debridement in addition to using hand scaling instruments to remove supra- and subgingival calculus Provide compreh ensive periodontal care for all dental patients referred to RDH by dental providers . This includes periodontal therapy ( ie . prophylaxis, scaling & root plan n ing, gross debridement, etc ), as well as in - depth oral hygiene instruction Administer local anesthesia und er supervision Must be able to take radiographs and interpret them Administer caries prevention agents and desensitizing agents Develop a nd maintain a perio recall system for all patients referred to RDH by dental providers Develop and revise oral health instructional mat erials and education techniques Compile statis tical data a nd written reports as requested Carr y out tests and report on results of new dental hygiene products Record and update medical and dental histories at each patient visit Review patients’ dietary habits and provide guidance on proper di et as it relates to oral health Take and pour up impressions for study casts Remove sutures Provide in-service training to dental and non-dental personnel at TCRHCC Provide prese ntations to community as needed Must complete all mandatory trainings and certifications as required of the position in the timeframe designated by supervisor ( e.g. radiology, infection control, periodontal therapy, mandatory hospital trainings) Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; review courses Proficient in dental charting for exams and treatment planning Will work with the Electronic Dental Record (EDR) and Electronic Health Record (EHR) programs; training will be provided Responsible for electronic health records data entry pertinent to patient service role Ensure Proper PPE is used at all times while on duty. Face surgical mask is to be worn in all hospital areas. Proper handwashing is required . If water is not available use hand sanitizer. Social distancing will be practiced by department . Proper PPE is used inside assigned Clinics or Units. NIOSH- approved N95 Masks filtering face piece respirator or higher, if available, this includes eye or face shields, gloves, and isolation gowns. Complete all donning and doffing tasks in a safe acceptable method and discard of used PPE accordingly. Complete provided training.
