Job description

Introduction

The Level Sensor team within ASML Research and Development in Veldhoven develops key technologies for future lithography systems. These systems enable the production of smaller, more powerful, and more energy-efficient chips. This internship contributes to a new Level Sensor concept using image-based height detection to meet future customer demands. You will help explore solutions that improve speed, robustness, and cost efficiency in a complex lithography environment. This internship offers hands-on experience at the heart of advanced semiconductor innovation.

Your assignment

During this internship, you will investigate image-based height detection concepts for use in lithography systems. The assignment focuses on identifying opportunities and risks of applying image-based methods in demanding, real-world environments. You will work closely with researchers and engineers and contribute your own ideas to improve system performance. Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Analyze image-based height detection concepts for use in advanced lithography systems.

  • Study the impact of abrupt height steps on detection accuracy and system robustness.

  • Investigate detection challenges caused by multiple reflections in thick or multilayer materials.

  • Explore image-based feedback methods to correct optical distortions and aberrations.

  • Build simulation and modeling approaches to evaluate concept performance.

  • Develop and assess algorithms for image processing and height estimation.

  • Clearly document results and discuss findings with the project team.

This is a non-thesis bachelor/master's internship for minimum 6 months, 5 days per week (4 days on-site). The start date of this internship is as of August/September 2026.

Your profile

To be suitable for the internship, you:

  • Are enrolled in a master’s degree in physics, electrical engineering, or applied mathematics.

  • Have experience or strong interest in image processing or computational methods.

  • Demonstrate solid analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Are comfortable with scientific programming and numerical modeling.

  • Work in a proactive and collaborative way within a multidisciplinary team.

Other requirements you need to meet:

  • You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship;

  • Attach your cover letter with a clear motivation why you are interested in this internship assignment in particular;

  • You need to be located in the Netherlands to be perform your internship. In case you are currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter includes the willingness to relocate.

  • If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement).
