Event Set-up and Custodial Supervisor, WSC               

   
This position represents Campus Life Support Services to the diverse patrons of the Wilkinson Student Center. It works closely with the WSC Custodial
Manager and Building Management to elevate the experience of customers who are both affiliated and unaffiliated with the university. It does this by
cultivating and leading a group of well-trained employees that help maintain a well-manicured facility, prepare event set up spaces for patron use, and quickly respond to various patron issues and requests.

What you’ll do in this position:

1. Employee Supervision

  • Directly supervise student and non-student employees
  • Schedule appropriate staffing levels
  • Review performance and support employee development (strengths, weaknesses, PDPs, raises)
  • Track hours, attendance, and payroll accuracy (missed punches, audits, shift alignment)
  • Manage staffing coverage up to 7 days/week and remain on call as needed
  • Arrange necessary access for employees to complete work
  • Be flexible to work outside scheduled times

2. Employee Training and Development

  • Train staff on policies, procedures, and compliance requirements
  • Train on event setup, cleaning procedures, and safe equipment/chemical use
  • Create and maintain training programs and individualized development plans
  • Monitor work quality and provide ongoing coaching
  • Hold regular meetings with team leads

3. Building and Event Oversite

  • Ensure rooms are secured before and after events
  • Schedule study/practice rooms when needed
  • Coordinate with event staff to ensure compliance with policies
  • Monitor building safety, resolve minor issues, and report larger concerns
  • Assist with evacuations and understand emergency procedures
  • Support Sunday operations and building use
  • Communicate issues to Building Management

4. Maintenance of the WSC’s Appearance

  • Oversee daily cleaning and upkeep of the facility
  • Maintain an organized, clean, and welcoming environment
  • Monitor additional maintenance areas as needed
  • Identify and address cleaning or maintenance gaps
  • Perform routine care such as carpet cleaning and floor polishing

What qualifies you for this role:

Required

  • A firm commitment to the mission of BYU.
  • 1-year Custodial experience or equivalent
  • Basic computer skills
  • Interpersonal relations
  • Crew supervision
  • Regular hours: 11 AM–7 PM, Monday–Friday, with flexibility for occasional Saturdays and Sundays

Physical Exam and Lift Test Required

Moderate – Physical effort represented by frequent handling of medium weight objects (approx. 20-50 lbs.) and materials, or use of medium
weight hand tools. May require climbing and working from ladders or in awkward positions.

Physical Requirements

  • Moving events set-up equipment (i.e. chairs, tables, podiums,
    risers, dividers, stanchions, carts, etc.)
  • Cleaning Restrooms: 30 min to 4 hours, up to 5 days per week, gloves, eye protection, masks
  • Dusting: 15 min to 4 hours, up to 5 days per week, masks, eye protection
  • Setting Risers: 30 min to 2 hours, up to 5 days per week, cut-resistant gloves
  • Repetitive Motion (sweeping, mopping, vacuuming): 30 min to 4 hours, up to 5 days per week, hearing protection
  • Carpet Cleaning: 1 to 4 hours, up to 5 days per week, gloves, hearing protection
  • Terrazzo Polishing: 4 hours, up to 5 days per week, gloves, eye protection, masks, boots
  • Biohazard Cleanup: 30 min to 4 hours, 2 to 4 times per month, gloves, eye protection, masks, boots
  • Snow Removal Around Building: 1 to 4 hours, during winter months, gloves, coats
  • Trash Room Cleaning: 1 hour, up to 5 days per week, gloves, masks
  • Outdoor Dock Cleanup: 1–2 hours, 1 time per week, gloves, reflective vests
  • Using Ladders and Lifts for Cleaning High Locations

Preferred

  • 3 years of custodial experience or equivalent
  • 1 year leadership experience
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Knowledge of various cleaning chemicals and their proper use
  • Advanced computer skills
  • Disciplinary procedures
  • Knowledge of general employment laws
  • Knowledge of University polices and guidelines
  • Knowledge of WSC policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of WSC Event setup procedures

Pay Grade: 51

Typical Starting Pay:

$59,000 - $75,500 annually

$28.25 - $36.25 per hour

                                            

The actual compensation offered will take into consideration internal equity and may vary based on the candidate’s job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and other relevant factors. Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive an offer higher than the posted typical range.
