Job description
Location: US (Nationwide) – Field Based
Target Background: Tier 2/3 Support, NOC, or Network Administration
Position Summary
We are seeking a Field Network Technician who combines advanced logical networking knowledge with hands-on field expertise. While your background may be in Cisco, Juniper, or Meraki environments, this role focuses on the "First Mile" of business connectivity. You will be the frontline expert responsible for ensuring enterprise and small-business clients stay connected via Ethernet-over-Copper, Coax, or Fiber Optics.
We need a professional who understands the "Why" behind the network (routing protocols, IP assignments, and latency) just as well as the "How" (physical cabling, ONT placement, and signal levels).
Key Responsibilities (The "Field" Focus)
- On-Site Diagnostics & Repair: Investigate and resolve service outages or performance degradation at the client’s place of business using a methodical Layer 1–3 troubleshooting approach.
- Physical Layer Maintenance: Repair or replace damaged cabling (Cat5e/6 or Fiber) and connectors. Perform fiber splicing and use OTDR/Light Meters to verify signal integrity.
- CPE Management: Install, re-configure, and troubleshoot Customer Premise Equipment (CPE), including Managed Routers, Network Interface Devices (NID), and Optical Network Terminals (ONT).
- Logical Verification: Interface with the NOC to verify VLAN tagging, IP assignments (Static/Dynamic), and routing protocols to ensure end-to-end connectivity.
- Inside Wiring: Navigate business environments (server rooms, IDF/MDF closets, drop ceilings) to extend demarcations or optimize equipment placement.
- Quality Assurance: Conduct comprehensive speed tests and latency benchmarks to ensure the circuit meets Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
Technical Skills & Qualifications
- The "Network Brain": While you may not be configuring Cisco switches daily, you must have the foundational knowledge equal to that of a CCNA, CCNP, or CCIE (although the actual certifications are not required). You should understand routing, switching, and the TCP/IP stack intimately.
- Connectivity Standards: Deep understanding of Ethernet standards and Fiber Optic technology (GPON, Active Ethernet).
- Tool Proficiency: Experience (or the aptitude to quickly master) fusion splicers, signal level meters, TDRs, and network testers (e.g., NetAlly, VIAVI).
- Hardware Familiarity: Even though the core work is on ISP gear, your experience with enterprise-grade hardware (Cisco, Juniper, Adtran, Ciena) will allow you to communicate effectively with client IT Managers.
- Certifications: Active or expired CCNA/CCNP is highly preferred to demonstrate your technical baseline.
Soft Skills & Physical Requirements
- Professional Presence: Ability to act as a technical consultant to business owners and IT Managers.
- Methodical Troubleshooting: The ability to isolate variables in a complex environment to find the root cause quickly.
- Physical Agility: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces (server closets/crawl spaces).
- Mobility: Must possess a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
