Position Overview
The Database Administrator II, under general supervision, routinely performs complex and non-routine specialized data management and administration support functions including troubleshooting, analysis, research, problem-solving, and recovery.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Database Design and Implementation
- Implements database design activities.
- Manages physical descriptions of database components.
- Installs and tests database systems.
Database Maintenance and Performance
- Maintain and upgrades complex, multiplatform databases.
- Monitors performance for complex, multiplatform databases for optimum performance.
Troubleshooting and Recovery
- Resolves performance problems and executes database recoveries.
- Troubleshoots and repairs databases.
- Documents database issues, recoveries, and repairs.
Client Support and Collaboration
- Works with clients to identify database needs to support the clients’ goals.
- Provides support for data access as part of analysis and modeling exercises.
- Work closely with graduate students and faculty to build integrated databases consisting of data common to wildlife research programs.
Documentation and Compliance
- Reviews accuracy of documentation of database administration methods.
- Ensures adherence to security procedures.
Project Coordination and Mentorship
- Coordinates technical activities of small project teams.
- Assists and mentors' students and staff in resolving technical issues.
Other Duties as Assigned
- Miscellaneous duties related to Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute’s research and teaching mission.

Required Qualifications
- Education – Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience – Three years of related experience in data management.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience – Experience with cloud-based databases and AWS accounts and data common to wildlife research programs (e.g., animal location data, remote camera images, vegetation data, remote sensing images, GIS data
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications
- Knowledge of advanced analysis, troubleshooting, and problem-solving techniques
- Knowledge of client relations and requirement analysis
- Knowledge of project management methodologies, context, and interrelationships, and Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL)
- Knowledge of and experience with Amazon Web Services data storage platforms
- Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others

Additional Information
A federal proclamation issued on September 19, 2025, imposes a $100,000 fee on new H-1B petitions filed after September 21, 2025. Texas A&M University-Kingsville will not pay this fee.
