Job description

Position Summary

This is a full-time co-op role from January – June 2019 based in Cambridge, MA. 

As a member of the Protein Formulation and Drug Product group at Biogen, the candidate will be responsible for designing and executing studies aimed at expanding our understanding of injectable protein drug product design space. The candidate will gain hands-on laboratory experience under the mentorship of experienced pharmaceutical development scientists and engineers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with Biogen’s scientists and engineers to conduct heat transfer (Kv) mapping studies to characterize Biogen’s laboratory and pilot-scale pharmaceutical freeze-driers.  
  • Perform measurements of vial heat transfer/Kv coefficients and generate a complete data package to support drug product development and technology transfers for multiple programs
  • The co-op will gain an in-depth understanding of lyophilization heat and mass transfer principles and an introduction to a mathematical model for primary drying
  • The Co-op will have the opportunity to present their work internally and interact with a diverse group of scientists and engineers within Biogen

Qualifications

To participate in the Biogen Co-op Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
  • Enrollment in a full-time undergraduate or graduate program, returning to the academic program following Biogen internship assignment
  • Minimum grade point average of 3.2 (preferred)
  • At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date
  • Completed at least one year of undergraduate studies
  • Hands on laboratory experience preferred
  • Familiarity with basic principles of pharmaceutical freeze-drying is preferred
  • General understanding of the basics of computer programing is preferred
  • Ability to work independently and with a team to achieve project goals is critical

Education

  • The ideal candidate will have completed at least two years of their undergraduate curriculum.
  • Desired majors include: Chemistry, Biology, Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Sciences or related fields.
