Overview

A leading acute care hospital in Austin is seeking a Director of NICU (Level III) to oversee a 99-bed neonatal intensive care unit. This unit maintains a daily census of ~75 patients, with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 2–3:1. The Director will manage 150 FTEs, including 2 Nurse Managers, and provide strategic leadership to ensure the delivery of exceptional patient care and staff development. This role reports directly to senior leadership and requires a strong background in NICU administration.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for the NICU, ensuring high-quality, patient-centered care.

  • Oversee staffing, performance, compliance, and adherence to standards of care.

  • Lead volume forecasting, patient throughput, and admission/discharge planning.

  • Develop and enforce policies and procedures aligned with regulatory standards.

  • Promote a culture of accountability, transparency, and evidence-based practice.

  • Monitor and drive quality, safety, efficiency, and patient experience outcomes.

  • Collaborate across departments to enhance interdisciplinary communication and care coordination.

  • Mentor and support nursing leaders, ensuring appropriate competencies are maintained.

  • Bachelor’s Degree – Required (BSN strongly preferred).

  • Master’s Degree – Preferred.

  • Current RN license (Texas or compact) – Required.

  • BLS – Required.

  • ACLS, NRP, FHM, or RNC-OB – Preferred.

  • Minimum 3 years of healthcare leadership experience – Required.

  • Minimum 3 years as a current NICU Director in an acute care setting – Required.
